Back home from the Braden residence, Elise lay on her bed, thinking about Baden's joking words.
How could she possibly want him to like her? That was just absurd.
He must have been sick with a fever, talking nonsense like that.
But who was he referring to when he said someone liked her? She hadn't noticed any signs at all.
It was probably just Braden spouting nonsense again. Yes, that had to be it.
Staring at her phone screen, she would occasionally chat with Jakobg aside from Braden, but ever since their unpleasant parting after work, he hadn't spoken to her again.
Was he still angry? She wondered to herself.
Should she take the initiative and message him? Just like before, she could casually send a sticker, and he would definitely reply.
She looked through all the stickers she had bought, found her favorite pink bunny, sent it to him, and then turned sideways to see if he would respond.
As expected, Jakobg replied.
The screen displayed his cool response: "Good night, going to sleep."
"That's it?" Elise stared at the screen, no longer having the courage to say anything more.
Could she just catch a cold or something? Facing Jakobg tomorrow was sure to be unbearably awkward.
------
The next day, Elise sat at her desk, drafting a script with her hands poised over the keyboard. Even if she couldn't think of what to write, she wouldn't take her eyes off the screen.
She checked the time on her computer; only two hours had passed since she started work, yet it felt like an entire morning. Time seemed to crawl, making the day feel endlessly long.
Evelyn had just returned from outside, bringing two iced coffees to Elise's desk again.
Elise looked at the coffee, shaking her head helplessly. "Not in the mood to drink today."
Evelyn looked at her in surprise, a smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. "Why? Something must have happened again, right?"
"Not convenient to say much here." Elise's defensive mechanism kicked in, if others knew she and Jakobg were possibly at odds, how could she continue working in the company?
"Then it must be work-related." Evelyn tilted her head, frowning slightly. "It's odd, though. You have something going on, and Jakobg hasn't come to check on you?"
"Him? Oh... yeah, he cares a lot about me," Elise lied, though a wave of guilt crept up, as if she'd done something wrong.
"Is that so? I thought he'd be the last person not to care about you," Evelyn's words hinted at something more. "Besides me, he's the one in the company who cares most about what's going on with you."
Elise protested, "I also care about both of you!"
But Evelyn shook her head. "That kind of care is different from this."
Elise was puzzled. "Why is it different?"
Did "caring" mean something more than just seeing someone as important?
"You can only sense it, it's hard to put into words!" Evelyn turned her head, and upon seeing Jakobg in her line of sight, she immediately stopped talking and hurried off.
Elise still couldn't figure out what Evelyn was up to, so she turned around as well, only to see Jakobg pass behind her desk, his face stony, as if he hadn't noticed her.
She wanted to call out to him but realized she had no real reason to keep him there.
