Siren Technology's AI pet ducks were officially launched in mid-July.
On the day of the launch, crowds flocked to the Siren Tech building. The creative and adorable AI pets attracted many young children. Kids were running around the green lawn while colorful balloons floated in the sun amidst laughter.
Estelle kept her word and bought an entire brood of pet ducks once it hit the market.
At dusk, she brought Crescent to pick them up. Oscar personally helped her load the boxes containing the pet ducks into the trunk.
"Two live ducks at home aren't enough, and now you're buying a bunch of fake ones." Oscar counted on his fingers. "Two, four, six, eight… You bought thirty?!"
He mentally multiplied the number by the high price and gaped. "You bought so many. Don't you think it would be noisy use all of them?"
Estelle smiled.
"Why would I use them myself? Professor Smith's young patients in clinical trials get lonely in the hospital. I'm taking these for them to play with."
Oscar had heard from Sera that Stella Technology had recently established partnerships with several medical teams. They seemed to be researching the realistic sensations of bionic robots and other contributions of AI in clinical medicine.
After the announcement, it sparked extensive social discussions regarding technology, medicine, and even the emotions and rights of bionic robots. Media and public opinion changed daily, and Stella Technology remained at the center of attention.
Oscar could see how busy she was. In this era of significant changes in technology and ethical principles, she was leading the way.
His expertise intersected little with these topics, and he knew he couldn't help her much. All he could do was watch from afar. He looked at Estelle for a moment and smiled. "There's a lot of traffic. Be careful on your way."
He remembered when she first visited his farm, and they sat in the courtyard chatting and drinking coffee.
That night, he watched Estelle in the darkness. She was smart and beautiful, with a unique charm that he couldn't quite describe with his limited vocabulary. He just couldn't take his eyes off her for long.
Estelle still didn't know the original purpose of that gathering, which Sera had intended to bring them together. But from the moment the robot appeared, whatever might have happened never did. Looking at the way Crescent looked at her, he felt inadequate in a second. He never thought artificial intelligence could surpass humans in some ways. His feelings for her, he admitted himself, might have been more about fascination and novelty. Yet in this world, everyone eventually grows lazy and tired of things. He was well aware that he couldn't guarantee the same unwavering loyalty and care that the robot could provide.
So, he decided to let it go.
Oscar stood by the roadside as Crescent turned his head and exchanged a glance with him through the car window.
Later, when the red light turned green, Crescent looked away and started the car. His tone was slightly jealous as he said, "He likes you."
Estelle was busy dealing with work issues and looked up after a while, puzzled. "What?"
A moment later, she furrowed her brow in thought. "I don't think so."
"You don't understand," Crescent said.
See, the robot is questioning humans again. Estelle laughed. "If I don't understand, then do you?"
Of course he understood. He had a complete psychological analysis and emotional system inside him. As a service robot, matters of love were right within his domain of expertise. If he didn't understand, who else could?
Fortunately, Estelle didn't feel anything for Oscar, which was the only reason he could remain calm and smile when greeting Oscar. Crescent pursed his lips silently. Estelle checked the time and suddenly said, "Oh, it's half past five. Professor Smith will be coming over soon. Have you prepared the ingredients?"
Ah, that man again.
The man who used to come over late every night to date Estelle. Crescent later found out that he was a medical expert in neural sensing.
In the past, he came because Estelle needed to consult him on some professional issues related to the perceptual conversion program she was writing. Now, he showed up regularly because his medical team had established a partnership with Stella Technology's R&D department. This man shamelessly used the pretext of discussing issues to come over for meals, and Crescent had to cook for him.
Crescent took a deep breath and calmed himself before answering, "It's ready."
