By the third day, Linda was finally able to eat some liquid food. Mikayla brought her some porridge in a thermos. Initially, she didn't want to trouble Cayden to bring her over, but he insisted on coming along.
An ill-timed ringtone broke the silence. Mikayla glanced at her phone and hurriedly stepped out to take the call. With her gone, the atmosphere in the room felt awkward with Cayden's imposing presence. An ill-timed ringtone broke the silence. Mikayla glanced at her phone and hurriedly stepped out to take the call. With her gone, the atmosphere in the room felt awkward with Cayden's imposing presence.
"Ms. Goodman, can I ask you about Mikayla and Cassius?"
"Uh... they were high school deskmates," Linda replied.
"How long did Mikayla date him?"
"Did Mikayla tell you?" Linda looked at him in surprise. "They dated for a little over a year."
Cayden gazed out the window thoughtfully. "Why did they break up?"
"Cassius's family sent him abroad. He left without a word, so Mikayla... was sort of dumped."
Meanwhile, in the stairwell, Mikayla had just finished her call when she ran into the last person she wanted to see.
Mikayla glared at him and tried to leave, but Cassius blocked her way.
"What do you want?" she snapped.
"You've had me blocked for so many years. Can you take me off your blacklist?"
"No," Mikayla replied coldly.
Cassius wasn't surprised by her answer and teased her, "You really are heartless."
"Do I need to remind you? Cassius, we ended a long time ago."
"It's never too late to start again," he said with the same carefree smile he used to have.
Mikayla was momentarily dazed, memories flooding back. "What do you mean?"
"I want to pursue you again."
"Are you insane? I'm married."
Cassius took a deep breath, suppressing his anger. "Wasn't it your father who forced you to marry?"
Mikayla glared at him. "Have you been spying on me?"
Cassius grabbed her wrist, pulling her closer. His eyes glanced over her slender, clean fingers, confirming his suspicion—she wasn't wearing a wedding ring.
"Ask yourself honestly, do you really like him?"
His tone softened, "Mikayla, if you say the word, I can take you away right now."
Mikayla tried to pull away from his grip, cursing, "You're crazy!" But Cassius refused to let go, and they stood there in a deadlock.
Suddenly, a hand rested on her waist, pulling her into a warm embrace. The scent of wood and cold air filled her senses.
Cayden had come looking for Mikayla and overheard their argument. He hurried over, his face expressionless as he stared at Cassius. Cassius glared back, his mouth set in a firm line, as Mikayla felt torn between them.
"Dr. Oneill, what business do you have with my wife during working hours?"
"Just catching up with an old classmate. Mikayla, what kind of husband did you find? So possessive—can you stand it?"
Mikayla blushed with embarrassment and was about to retort when Cayden interjected, "My wife told me she doesn't quite like you. Dr. Oneill, it would be wise not to make a fool of yourself. Besides, I don't think it's appropriate to hold hands with a married woman in public."
Cassius's lips curled into a slight smile as he looked at Mikayla, then at Cayden. "A marriage in name only. How long do you think that will last, Mr. Novak?"
Cayden raised an eyebrow, "I didn't know Dr. Oneill enjoyed prying into others' marriages. Should I inform Marcus about this?"
Cassius's expression darkened. "You're using my brother against me?"
"I'm just giving a friendly reminder."
Mikayla couldn't stand listening to them bicker like schoolchildren. "Let's go. Ignore him," she said, pulling Cayden away.
For a long time, Cassius leaned against the wall, watching their retreating figures with a bitter sigh. This was more difficult than he had imagined. Could a broken heart ever truly be mended?
