Eventually, under the pressure from her best friends, Aria resumed the video call. Nathan stayed by her side, not leaving.
The five university best friends and roommates stared at Nathan like hungry wolves.
Nathan remained composed and polite. “Hello, I’m Nathan, Aria’s husband.”
“Hello, hello! I can’t believe someone actually married our silly Aria,” the dorm leader started, eyeing Nathan appreciatively.
Nathan smiled softly and pulled Aria closer. “Aria is wonderful. How could anyone not want her?”
“Do you have any brothers? Can you introduce me?” asked one of the boy-crazy roommates.
Nathan answered politely, “I do have a brother, but he’s under contract and currently not allowed to date.”
“Why can’t he date because of a contract?” one roommate asked, puzzled.
Aria remembered that as a public figure, especially one who relied on their looks, her brother-in-law, Leonard, likely couldn’t date because it might upset his fan base and affect his career.
But she couldn’t let these wolves know Leonard was her brother-in-law. Otherwise, they would descend upon her home ask her to introduce Leonard to them.
Aria quickly muted the call and covered the phone. She looked at Nathan. “Don’t tell them Leonard is your brother!”
Nathan looked puzzled. “Why not?”
“You already make them crazy. If they find out Leonard is my brother-in-law, I won’t have a moment’s peace,” Aria said, shaking her head vigorously.
She could already imagine them booking the earliest flight just to see Leonard, and possibly even moving in with her.
Nathan laughed at her exaggerated concern and kissed her on the corner of her eye. “Alright, whatever you say.”
Aria blushed at his sudden affection but nodded. “You don't say anything. Let me handle it.”
Nathan smiled and agreed.
Aria unmuted the call and positioned the phone again.
“Ahhh! What were you doing off-camera? Were you guys making out?” came the immediate barrage of accusations.
“Give them a break. They’re newlyweds. We should be understanding.”
“But did you have your wedding? You didn’t invite us!”
“Wait, what about the brother you mentioned? We haven’t finished talking about that.”
The questions came at her from all directions, leaving Aria speechless. She wanted to end the call again.
“Can you all be quiet for a moment? You’re bombarding me with questions. Which one should I answer first?”
“Of course, why didn’t you invite us to the wedding?” the five voices demanded in unison.
“I haven’t had the wedding yet. We just registered our marriage,” Aria explained quickly.
“Oh, I thought you were going to forget about us completely,” one of them said.
Aria laughed awkwardly. “Of course not.”
But deep down, she felt a pang of guilt. Since her rebirth, it seem that she had neglected her friends.
In her previous life, they had never lost touch and had grown even closer. Especially after Nathan’s death, her friends’ support had been the only thing that kept her going.
