Isabel, spoiled since childhood, burst into tears at such an incident.
The other project managers who came along kept apologizing profusely.
"I will make Matthew pay for this," Ethan left this remark with a strong warning tone.
He carried me quickly out of the room.
In the elevator, Nathan began, "Mr. Green, should I call a doc..."
His words abruptly stopped.
Momentarily, at some floor, Nathan exited the elevator.
The elevator fell silent, one could hear a pin drop.
The hand resting under my thigh withdrew, and I felt a sense of falling.
Almost instinctively, I opened my eyes and clutched tightly around Ethan's neck.
"Ah! Ethan."
His hand gripped my waist tightly, the other supporting me, changing from a horizontal carry to me clinging onto him.
Perhaps pleased by my reaction, his voice carried a hint of amusement.
"Wrap your legs around me.Do as I say."
He knew I was pretending.
He had seen through such little tricks of mine many times before.
The position was embarrassing, but as I was in need, I complied.
Ethan chuckled, "Not pretending anymore?"
"Weren't we strangers?"
"What is this now? Making a fool of me?"
His palm pressed against the back of my neck.
It was fierce, yet not entirely so.
"Sophie! Speak!"
The polished interior of the elevator mirrored our embracing figures.
Every encounter since our reunion had been unpleasant.
I felt a moment of sadness, burying my head in his neck.
"Mr Green, give me a chance."
Ethan paused, his voice resonant and seductive echoing in the elevator:
"Should I say yes, or should it depend on your behaviour?"
His words were ambiguous, but I understood.
Sophie, are you asking for a chance in love?
Or just a chance in the business arena?
My voice choked up, remembering the past,
At 20, I flirted aggressively with him under the influence of alcohol.
The veins on Ethan's neck stood out as he restrained my hands.
"Sophie, can you tell the difference?"
"Do you truly love, or are you just afraid of losing?"
I couldn't deny it.
The latter was indeed greater than the former.
Before coming here, I had a conversation with the woman who gave birth to me in the opulent Campbell family villa.
"Sophie, don't confront your stepfather when you are powerless."
She knew Matthew had secretly installed cameras in my room for over half a year but never mentioned it.
"What can you rely on without money, beauty? Your body?"
Each word struck home, awakening me to reality.
Ethan might indulge me, but he did not want purpose-driven affection.
All my coquetry had a motive; he never gave me a chance.
