Isabel laughed again.
"Sister, which man spilled the beans to you today?"
After speaking, she switched to a sweet smile: "Mr. Green, sorry, this was supposed to be a private meeting between two companies."
She stood up to pour Ethan a drink: "Funny enough, this Ms. Lane is my sister."
"My sister likes to oppose my dad in everything, and yet, she has no real talents."
"Do you know what she relies on? Men."
Ethan frowned, tossing something casually onto the table with a startling clatter.
I clenched the business proposal in my hands, listening to Isabel's sarcastic remarks.
My self-esteem was trampled on the ground.
Yet, this collaboration was truly crucial for me.
It was so important that it could determine whether I could escape Matthew's oppression and become a truly dignified person.
Nathan grabbed my elbow: "Miss Lane, please leave."
I held onto the back of the chair, thinking about the friend who had endured countless nights for this collaboration.
Thinking about every strong drink I had consumed to keep a client.
And dreaming about the radiant me after succeeding.
I locked eyes with Ethan, utterly sincere:
"Mr. Green, please give me a chance, look at the business plan I've made. If in the end I am truly inferior, I'll accept defeat."
Ethan's gaze fell on Nathan holding my elbow, whose fingers nervously loosening his tie.
Isabel's disdainful voice rang out again:
"Sister, aren't you tired of using such tricks?"
"At 19, you tricked some unknown man to come home to defy our father. You've relied on men to gain resources in your career, and now you're using this pitiful act to gain sympathy?"
She was still young, spoiled by Matthew, daring to say anything at the dinner table.
At 15, she did something wrong and was sent away by Matthew, yet she hasn’t changed this bad habit.
She had never met Ethan, only heard about the man I brought home one year who beat up Matthew.
Thus, she naturally didn’t know who this "known man" she spoke of really was.
I gritted my teeth, pulled by Nathan.
I'm not a gambler.
But now, all I could do was bet.
Bet that Ethan, in the end, might soften his heart towards me one more time.
