Bang—
Phoenix kicked the table before him, the scent of alcohol still lingering as he crossed his legs and surveyed the group gathered.
"What did you do to my wife during her surgery?"
A cluster of doctors trembled before him, hesitant to speak.
"I understand your concerns, with families to protect, sacrificing your conscience to fulfill someone else's desires. Isn't that right?"
But what about him?
Their families were intact, while he, Phoenix, had lost the only person he loved!
None dared utter a word in response.
Enraged, Phoenix bellowed, "I didn't realize that in J city, there are still those daring enough to play tricks under my nose! If you don't speak, do you really think your fate, or that of your families, will be any better?"
The small room was suddenly enveloped in a chilling tension, almost suffocating. Phoenix's eyes burned red, as though ready to devour those before him!
One at the front, unable to withstand Phoenix's intimidation, suddenly fell to his knees.
How could this be… Miss Monahan had assured them that Mr. Lee wouldn't care about that woman's life. Moreover, all signs pointed to Mr. Lee favoring Miss Monahan. They allowed Miss Monahan in because she was backed by Mr. Lee.
Who in J city dared provoke the Lee family? Let alone when Miss Monahan threatened their lives…
"Mr. Lee, you might not believe us, but it was Miss Monahan who ordered us to do it!"
Phoenix rose, his disheveled hair hanging over his forehead. "Why wouldn't I believe you? I demand you to tell me everything, every single detail."
Their recounts pierced his heart like knives, reliving every torment Serena had endured.
'I'm not sick, I just don't want this child to be born.'
'It's an honor for him to die for me.'
'Serena, you're the one who's unloved. Your child doesn't deserve to be born.'
'Don't use general anesthesia, use local. Let her see how her child dies.'
'Do you see that? Those shattered pieces, that's your child.'
Each sentence stabbed at Phoenix's heart, leaving him too anguished to continue questioning them. He wanted only to curl into a corner, forever silenced.
How desperate must his girl have been?
To witness her formed child being torn apart before her eyes, and then learning of her mother's passing.
No wonder… she wanted to die.
No wonder… she wasn't afraid when she knew the brakes were faulty.
Overwhelming despair had already crushed her. What else was there to fear?
"Ahh—"
He punched the wall, blood trickling down his hand.
Defeated, he dismissed them all.
Since learning of Serena's pregnancy, he had been both joyful and fearful.
He secretly replaced her medication with vitamins, believing that a child might soften Serena's resolve.
Indeed, she had mellowed, nurturing her pregnancy at the apartment, her temperament much improved. He planned to settle the Nightingale Corporation matter after the birth and then marry her.
As for his supposed debt to Amelia, he didn't need to repay it at Serena's expense.
Yet, in the end, he drove Serena to her death.
He, too, had looked forward to this child's arrival. He had always loved Serena and her alone.
