"Yes, there was a problem with the brakes." The rescue personnel confirmed again, "Furthermore, based on our initial investigation, the driver was initially headed towards a crowded area. It's likely that she realized the brake failure and, unable to control the vehicle, drove here instead. Such a pity... Oh, are you her family? Please accept our condolences. We will do our utmost to find the culprit."
The car's brakes were faulty.
The missing person was not deemed a suicide.
It was murder.
Each phrase echoed relentlessly in Phoenix's mind.
And Serena's desperate cries moments before her death.
"You all wished for my death, didn't you? Well, here it is!"
She had risked her life to save them, spending two days and nights in a coma; she had watched their child be torn apart; Mrs. Nightingale had removed her oxygen mask due to the shock... What had he put Serena through?
He had always believed Serena to be cowardly and selfish. Yet, how could such a person, knowing she was about to die, still consider the lives of others?
The truth he once believed was now revealed to be utterly false!
He had been blind, both in sight and heart.
He was unworthy of Serena.
Phoenix snapped back to reality and roared in fury, "Investigate! Find out who did this! Who visited Mr. Nightingale while I was injured? What happened during Serena's surgery? And the accident from years ago, check everything again!"
"Yes, sir." Lucas sensed something was amiss but, considering Phoenix's condition, attempted to dissuade him, "Sir, let's leave this to the professionals here."
Phoenix shrugged off his hand and, with great effort, walked to the railing. "She must be alive. I'll wait for her return."
Lucas frowned, trying again, "Mr. Lee, please return first. We'll wait here. Your injuries..."
"It's fine." Phoenix stared out at the vast sea, exuding an aura of chill and death.
Lucas dared not imagine the scenario if Serena's body were to be recovered. What would the Mr. Lee do then?
Amidst the chaos, Phoenix's phone rang. The lazy tone on the other end only served to deepen the frigid aura around Phoenix.
"Mr. Lee, have you found her yet? I sent you the address. That woman needs to learn obedience; you need to discipline her properly." Evan lounged on his balcony, uncorking a bottle of wine, elated at having toyed with the woman he despised most.
She was too proud, like the brightest rose among many, tempting him to pluck her.
From childhood, her eyes were solely on Phoenix, following him like a fool, never sparing him a glance.
She smiled warmly at everyone, kind and generous, treating everyone equally, except Phoenix. Her goodness seemed too fake!
Having finally seen through her facade, he seized the chance to punish her.
He helped her escape Phoenix's grasp only to have her captured and tormented.
Offering hope only to crush it. From heaven to hell, such was the game.
This cat-and-mouse chase amused him greatly.
Phoenix's chill seemed to seep through the phone, chilling to the bone. "Evan! Whatever Serena did to you, if you misunderstood her involvement in that accident, and you've had your revenge by destroying Nightingale Corporation, I told you last time, I'd have her save Amelia, and you weren't to touch her again! Or Nightingale Corporation! Is this your idea of keeping your word, leading to Serena's death?!"
