Edward took out 300 dollars from his wallet and handed it to her. "Consider this borrowed from me; take it."
Zoe accepted it awkwardly and went to the pharmacy. With 57 dollars in change, she placed it on the counter. "I'll come back tomorrow to repay you. I have to go now."
" Aren't you getting an IV?" Edward called out to her.
She turned, offering him a faint smile. "…No, I think medicine should be enough. I don't have time."
Edward studied the scratch marks and the remnants of a slap on her face. After a moment's hesitation, he asked, "Was that your husband yesterday?"
Zoe's hand holding the medicine stiffened. She dropped her smile and after a pause, nodded hastily.
"Does he hit you?" Edward couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy.
Her face flushed under his gaze. She shook her head, then reconsidered and nodded.
Edward hesitated. "You could report this to the police, after all..."
She cut him off, rushing out of the room. "If there's nothing else, I'll leave now and return your money tomorrow."
He stared, watching her disappear before turning his gaze to the 57 dollars left behind.
Back home, Zoe stared at the reinforced security bars installed throughout the house, lost in thought. Her wallet, along with her ID, was lost somewhere, adding to her headache. She needed to get replacements.
Her stomach grumbled with hunger, starting to ache.
Just as she cooked pasta and was about to eat, the door opened.
Zoe looked up to see Evan, his expression cold, standing at the entrance.
She paused, taking a bite of her pasta.
Evan sat opposite her.
Zoe remained composed, continuing to eat her meal.
For ten minutes, he watched her finish her pasta bite by bite.
She put down her fork, wiped her mouth with a tissue. "When are we going to finalize the divorce?"
Evan was stunned, anger flaring up. "Didn't I say we're not divorcing? Why do you keep making a fuss?"
Zoe's eyes were hollow, as if looking at him but also past him. "I'm not making a fuss. I just want a divorce."
He was frustrated. "What do you want from me?"
"A divorce." She lowered her eyelids, her tone calm. "People change. I told myself countless times that Evan was momentarily confused and that he'd come back one day. But I can't wait for that day anymore."
Evan slammed his fist on the table, his eyes bloodshot. "I've broken it off with that woman outside. Can you stop this madness?"
"No. Whether you've broken it off or not is your business, but this divorce, it must happen."
Zoe, unable to rest properly, had prominent dark circles under her eyes. She looked up at the man who once promised her happiness countless times, her heart aching.
"I won't have children in this lifetime. You listen to your mother, be with her…"
"Zoe!" He interrupted her irritably. "I said no divorce, and that's final!"
"Why?! Why should everything be according to you?!" Her shoulders trembled as she accused him.
She always obeyed Evan. Whatever he said, she agreed.
Zoe once wanted to raise cats or dogs to alleviate her boredom, but Evan said they were too noisy and unclean and ask her not to raise it.So she didn't.
She wanted a child, but he said it was his career peak Career comes first, and we'll plan on having children after we've settled down. She agreed.
She wanted to work, but he said it was too tiring and she should stay home as his wife. He would feel pained if she need to strive on her own.
She agreed.
