The next day, Evan insisted on discharging himself from the hospital, opting to return home despite the doctor's earnest persuasion.
Arriving home, he found Zoe absent. His face darkened instantly, and he whipped out his phone to call her.
Zoe, upon seeing his call, felt a headache coming on. What new torture was he planning?
Massaging her aching temples, she reluctantly answered the call. "Where are you?" he demanded.
"At the hospital," she replied.
Evan scoffed. "Oh, off to meet your lover at the hospital, are you?"
"Can you stop with these baseless accusations?" Zoe closed her eyes, unwilling to engage in another argument.
'Lover'?! Could Evan be any more absurd?
"Well, then, what business do you have at the hospital? Don't tell me it's for treatment. Oh, right, you were there yesterday too, weren't you? And a while back as well, I remember now."
Evan snickered, his lungs practically bursting with fury.
Weary, she replied, "I told you I had something to attend to. What are you implying?"
"You caught me off guard with this cheating, Zoe. I underestimated you," he accused.
"Do whatever you want to think. I'm innocent," she replied, knowing her words would fall on deaf ears.
"I give you twenty minutes to get back here, or I'll come catching you cheating, and it won't be pretty," he roared before hanging up without hesitation.
Zoe glanced at the remaining IV drip, summoning the nurse. "Could you remove this needle? I have something urgent to attend to," she gestured to her hand.
The nurse frowned. "Your health comes first. Whatever it is, wait until the drip finishes. It's only a little while longer."
Zoe wished she could.
"You're young. Don't exhaust yourself unnecessarily," The nurse comforted, with a gentle smile playing on her lips,"Trust me, it'll be done in an hour. There's no rush, your health matters most, okay?"
Eventually, Zoe relented with a nod after the nurse's persistent persuasion.
No sooner had the nurse left than Zoe removed the needle within two minutes.
She dashed out of the hospital.
Zoe knew Evan all too well; if he threatened something, he meant it.
His temper had always been volatile, and Zoe had once been the exception to his ire, but no longer.
Opening the door, she found Evan seated in the middle of the sofa, his face as dark as a storm cloud.
He stared at her intently.
Zoe took a deep breath, removing the key from the lock.
"You're not setting foot in that hospital again," Evan growled between gritted teeth.
Her hand paused mid-motion, and she finally closed the door.
"On what grounds could you demand like that?" she challenged.
He rose, advancing towards her step by step.
"Zoe, do you think I, Evan, am a pushover? Someone you can manipulate?" His tone was eerily calm.
"I never thought that," she replied softly.
"Oh? Then how dare you cheat on me so brazenly?" His eyes chilled as he fixed them on her face.
"I've told you, I haven't," Zoe replied calmly while changing her shoes.
Evan's anger simmered at her nonchalant demeanor.
Just then, her phone rang. It was Zoe's phone, and he swiftly snatched it from her before she could react.
Frowning, she reached out to grab it back.
Evan glanced at the caller ID, blocked her attempt, smirked coldly, and answered the call on speakerphone.
Zoe, unable to see who it was, tried to snatch the phone, stretching on tiptoes.
But he was too tall, lifting the phone out of her reach.
