Everett's face darkened, his earlier enthusiasm instantly extinguished. "Disagree with what? Why are you meddling in the affairs of a young couple?"
"I'm his mother! Would I ever harm him?!" Claire slammed her fork down, her voice rising.
Zoe felt a headache coming on and continued eating her meal in silence.
Evangeline frowned and put down her fork too. "Mom, Dad, please don't argue. Let my brother and sister-in-law resolve this themselves..."
Before she could finish, Claire glared at her. "Can't you eat without talking?"
She pulled the corner of her mouth in a silent rebuke and fell quiet.
Everett slapped the table. "Enough, enough. Stay out of this. Let them handle it themselves. Why insist on a divorce? If they can be together, it's fate. Better if they can spend a lifetime together."
His words were directed at Evan and Zoe.
Claire abruptly stood up. "No way! I said..."
"That's enough!" Everett was genuinely annoyed now, pounding the table harder. "Would you just stop?! I said don't meddle, don't meddle. Their marital issues are none of your business!"
"But I'm her mother!"
Everett was at a loss for words.
Zoe finished her meal and placed her cutlery down. "Dad, Mom," she called softly.
Both turned to look at her.
"I want a divorce."
Evan clenched his fists. What was she up to now?
Zoe smiled faintly. "Our feelings for each other have vanished now, and the idea of divorce isn't sudden. Maybe we just weren't meant to be togather, unable to walk a lifetime together. And... I can't bear children, so Mother is right. With our incompatible feelings, we should divorce."
Her heart ached suddenly, her nose tingling as she looked at Evan, whose face had turned grim. "I don't love you anymore, so let's divorce."
I don't love you anymore.
Ha, how ridiculous.
Claire clapped her hands in delight. "See, that's more like it."
Evan laughed in anger, ignoring her and addressing Everett and Claire. "Dad, Mom, I won't divorce."
Claire, in her haste, spoke without thinking. "Evan, what's wrong with you? Jocelyn is pregnant, and I'm waiting to hold my grandchild…" She quickly covered her mouth.
Jocelyn?
Zoe understood.
Everett caught it too, his temper flaring. "Who's pregnant?"
Claire covered her mouth, speechless. Everett looked at the uncomfortable-looking Evan. "Evan, speak up!"
He remained silent, instinctively glancing at Zoe.
She seemed not to hear, her face expressionless as she stared at her plate.
Under the table, her hand moved uncontrollably again.
"Speak! You are heartless! Is this how you repay your wife?!" Everett grabbed his half-drunk glass and hurled it at him.
Betrayal in love was the most shameful thing.
The glass hit his forehead, splitting it open, blood seeping out as wine streaming down his face, making him appear somewhat terrible.
He remained stone-faced, his features darkening.
"Everett Sterling, what are you doing?! How can you treat your child like this?! He's your son!" Claire was distraught, screeching as she rushed over.
Crying and cursing at Everett, she wipe wine off Evan's face and clothes.
"Fine, you hit our son for someone who's about to be an outsider! Everett, you will pay for this!"
Someone about to be an outsider.
So that was her definition.
Zoe didn't look at him, bowing her head in contemplation, a bitter taste simmering within.
Evangeline was busy fetching tissues for Claire.
