Chapter 44

　　Vivienne paused, then looked at Asher. "Let's talk privately."
　　Asher agreed readily, "Alright."
　　The two turned and headed to the guest room, leaving Melanie alone in the living room, uncertain of what to do. 
　　Was her mother upset about the proposal? Or did she disagree with it? Things had seemed fine before. Melanie stood nervously by the guest room door, but unfortunately, she couldn't overhear their conversation.
　　About ten minutes later, the door opened. Seeing her anxiety, Vivienne teased, "What could I possibly do to him?" 
　　She knew that if she ever lay her hand on Asher, her daughter would cry on the spot... 
　　Shaking her head in resignation, she said nothing more and headed upstairs. Sighing, she knew she had to next persuade Leonard. His fiery temper would surely explode when he learned of Asher's proposal and Melanie's acceptance. She had to figure out a delicate way to break the news to him.
　　Once Vivienne left, Melanie anxiously turned to Asher. "What did she say? Did she offer you money to leave me?" 
　　Asher chuckled at her remark. "You've been watching too many dramas." 
　　Melanie defended herself, "That's a reasonable assumption." 
　　After all, she could picture Vivienne doing something like that. 
　　Asher drew her into the guest room and whispered in her ear, "She just had a simple chat with me about the future. Relax, she won't break us apart or pay me off to leave you..." 
　　Her imagination was indeed vivid. "Really?" 
　　Melanie still felt there was more to Vivienne's talk than that. But no matter how much she probed, Asher refused to divulge more. 
　　Seeing she couldn't get anything out of him, Melanie gave up. As long as they could be together, it was fine. 
　　Her mother wouldn't demand anything unreasonable or act out of line; she trusted Vivienne in this aspect. After chatting a bit more with Asher, Melanie left the guest room and returned to her own.
　　Asher watched her leave with a deep sigh. Vivienne's request wasn't a big deal. She simply wanted him to exercise restraint until Melanie graduated. 
　　As for the proposal, since Melanie had accepted, Vivienne had no objections. She also mentioned treating Melanie well, which Asher could easily accept. These were all for their future, and he understood them perfectly. 
　　It was just that... Asher realized he needed to maintain some distance from Melanie for now. Otherwise, it would be a real struggle for him. Heaving another sigh, he stepped into the bathroom and took a cold shower.
　　The next day, Leonard exuded anger from every pore. His irritation escalated the moment he saw Asher – this shameless man who had stolen his daughter! A proposal? Ha! Who gave you the right to propose? Leonard was furious. 
　　Despite Vivienne's prolonged persuasion, Leonard remained irate. Just thinking about it fueled his anger! On the verge of lashing out at Asher, Vivienne whispered, "Think carefully. If you lay a hand on him, Melanie will be heartbroken and might argue with you. In the end, you'll be the one hurting."
　　These words snapped Leonard back to reality. He was left speechless. He recognized that this was someone he couldn't lay a finger on! So angry that he skipped breakfast, Leonard stormed out of Snow family's home, heading to the office to cool off.
　　Asher apologized with a wry smile, "I seem to have upset Mr. Snow again." Vivienne waved it off nonchalantly, "Don't worry about it. Get used to it. He'll be angry for a couple of days, then he'll accept the situation and be fine." After all, Asher had taken her daughter away; Leonard's temper was bound to simmer for a few days.
