Vivienne's gaze lingered on Asher for a long moment, unhurried and thoughtful.
Melanie wondered what her mother was planning, only for Vivienne to suddenly break into a smile.
"Asher, Melanie has been visiting you daily, and I can't seem to stop her. However, her constant travel back and forth is rather troublesome."
Melanie interjected softly, "It's... not troublesome."
Just a bit of traveling! She could handle it.
Vivienne shot her a sidelong glance and continued, "How about this? Since you live alone, why not move in with us for a while until your injuries heal, then we can discuss future arrangements."
Melanie was stunned. "? ???" Did she hear that correctly?
Asher, too, seemed taken aback by this unexpected offer.
Melanie gazed hopefully at Asher, eager for his agreement but afraid he might decline. After all, moving in with her family would surely spark gossip.
Perhaps it was better for her to continue making the trips! Once school started, she could consider buying an apartment nearby.
Suddenly, Asher agreed with a simple, "Okay."
Melanie looked at Asher, startled, then back at Vivienne, utterly baffled.
Her mind was filled with question marks. This development... she was struggling to keep pace.
It wasn't until Asher had packed his belongings and joined Melanie in the car that she fully processed what was happening.
Melanie leaned towards Vivienne. "Mom, where did this idea come from?"
Vivienne glanced at Asher in the front seat and spoke evenly, "He's your friend, and taking care of your friends is what I should do, isn't it?"
Melanie was left speechless. She couldn't argue with that logic.
Vivienne narrowed her eyes. She was also genuinely curious about Asher under her watchful eye. He was undeniably exceptional, but there was a depth to him that made her cautious. This could be a test for Asher. If he proved suitable, he could become a permanent part of the Snow family. Otherwise, it would be a polite farewell. She trusted Asher was wise enough to read between the lines.
Some things were better left unsaid. Melanie clearly had feelings for Asher, and Asher seemed to reciprocate, yet the elephant in the room remained unaddressed. Perhaps they awaited the right moment, or perhaps there were other factors at play. Vivienne feared for her daughter's potential heartache.
Vivienne hadn't informed Leonard beforehand, leading to his utter confusion when the three of them arrived in the living room. The peeled orange in his hand dropped onto the carpet with a soft thud.
"...Why did you bring Asher back?"
Aria, emerging from her room, froze upon seeing Asher, her gaze a mix of complexity and surprise.
Why was he here?
Vivienne briefly explained the situation, that Asher would be staying with them for some time.
Leonard immediately protested!
"No way, letting him stay is tantamount to openly welcoming him into our home!"
Wouldn't his daughter be inseparable from Asher now?
Vivienne smiled sweetly at Leonard. "I didn't quite catch that. You have another chance to repeat yourself."
Leonard immediately backed down. "...I said I have no objections."
Melanie was left dumbfounded.
Thoughtfully, she glanced at Asher, wondering how he'd react if confronted like Leonard. It was hard to imagine Asher backing down so easily, given his cool demeanor.
