Leonard was about to argue but swallowed his words when he met Vivienne's gaze.
"Do you think Melanie truly likes him?"
Vivienne rubbed her temple with her other hand. "What do you think?"
Would Melanie have secretly traveled all the way to B City if she didn't like Asher? She knew her daughter's temperament better than anyone.
Leonard sighed heavily. "I know Melanie might have feelings for him. But why should my daughter, whom I've raised for so long, pine after another man?"
He was just angry, extremely so!
Vivienne scoffed. "Years ago, wasn't I my father's treasure before you 'stole' me away? Why meddle in your daughter's feelings? It's enough to know that the person she chooses is worthy of a lifetime commitment!"
Leonard remained silent for a long while before reluctantly nodding. He couldn't interfere too much in his daughter's emotions; he wasn't an unreasonable man. The Snow family didn't require their daughter to enter into a political marriage. While alliances brought benefits, did they ensure happiness for the children involved? He had witnessed too many unhappy outcomes to ever force his daughter into such a union. He simply believed no one was good enough for his daughter.
Meanwhile, in the ward, Asher looked at Melanie quizzically. "Is your father dissatisfied with me?"
Melanie quickly shook her head. "Not at all."
He was probably just being peculiar again. Melanie felt awkward. With both her parents in B City, she couldn't stay here indefinitely to take care of Asher; they would object. Yet, she was worried about leaving Asher alone. She hung her head, deflated, unsure of what to say next.
Asher observed her subtle change in demeanor, his eyes darkening with understanding.
After a while, Mr. Smith entered the room. "The discharge procedures are complete," he informed Asher.
"Thank you, Mr. Smith," Asher replied.
Melanie looked up in shock. "Why are you checking out?"
Asher thought for a moment and explained, "The doctor said I'm fine, just some minor scratches. Besides, I have things to attend to. And since your parents are in B City, we can return together."
Melanie wanted to protest but, seeing Asher's determination, she closed her mouth, looking even more dejected.
Asher's eyes filled with helplessness. Silly girl, didn't she understand he wanted to go back with her? When Mr. Smith mentioned her parents coming to B City, he knew Melanie would be in a dilemma. He didn't want to see her troubled. Besides, he truly was fine.
Melanie muttered something and asked Mr. Smith to pack her things. She needed to inform her parents. As she stepped out, she saw her parents talking—her dad with his head bowed, obviously being scolded by her mom.
Approaching them, she said, "Asher has arranged for his discharge, so whatever you were discussing, it's unnecessary now."
Leonard grumbled, "At least the kid knows something!"
Vivienne shot him another glare, exasperated by his antics.
Turning to Melanie, Vivienne asked, "Has the doctor approved his discharge?"
Melanie nodded. "Yes, but I think we should still be cautious."
"Well, since the paperwork is done, let's grab lunch and then head back together. This way, you can spend more time with him," Vivienne suggested with the wisdom of experience.
Her tone was gentle, yet Melanie blushed with embarrassment.
