Melanie's good mood lasted until the morning of the next day.
At the dining table, Aria, with reddened eyes, looked at Melanie pitifully. "Melanie, today..."
Melanie responded swiftly, "I'm not busy today, I have plenty of time. Whether you want to go out for a walk or return to your place, I can accompany you."
Aria paused, then nodded. "Can you take me out for a stroll? I need to clear my mind."
Melanie frowned, casting a hesitant glance at Leonard before focusing back on Aria. She sincerely suggested, "I think it's better if you don't go out for a walk, Aria. You might bump into families strolling around, which could make you feel worse. Or, you could go back to your place, but then again, that might evoke painful memories..."
She wore a troubled expression, genuinely torn.
Aria was speechless.
If it's not suitable here, nor there, why does she offer in the first place? Was she just toying with her?
Aria gritted her teeth, dropped her chopsticks, and tears fell with a plop before she hurried back to the guest room.
An awkward silence fell over the dining table.
Vivienne looked at her daughter helplessly. "You…" She stopped mid-sentence, unsure of what to say.
Melanie remained calm. "I was just thinking of her, you know!"
Vivienne and Leonard exchanged a look but remained silent. They weren't fools; they could tell their daughter was intentionally provoking Aria.
After Melanie returned to her room, Vivienne followed suit.
"Melanie, do you have a problem with Aria?"
Melanie had never spoken to Aria like this before.
Melanie shook her head. "I have no issue with her, I'm just being honest."
Vivienne didn't buy it. "..."
She knew her daughter's thoughts better than anyone.
Melanie was clearly showing subtle hostility towards Aria.
"If you don't like her, I'll have your father send her back after some time," Vivienne offered.Such a drastic change in her daughter's attitude towards Aria must indicate that Aria has done something wrong; she trusts her daughter's judgment.
Melanie was surprised by her mother's suggestion, considering she hadn't revealed anything.
Lowering her eyes, she hesitated. Sharing her rebirth would likely impact her mother in ways she couldn't predict, so she kept it to herself.
Melanie's silence confirmed Vivienne's suspicions.
She patted Melanie's shoulder. "Since Aria has just moved in, we can't send her back immediately. Your father wouldn't agree either. We need to give Aria time to recover."
Melanie suddenly smiled and looked Vivienne straight in the eye. "What if Aria doesn't recover for years and insists on staying with us?"
Vivienne's expression changed. "Do you know something?"
Melanie turned away, looking elsewhere. "I just know that what she wants isn't merely staying as a guest for a few days...
When you and Dad judge people, you always do so with kindness.
But not everyone returns that kindness."
Vivienne stood frozen, sensing pain and a profound sense of experience in her daughter's words.
Her heart ached uncontrollably.
Moving closer, she embraced Melanie.
"Don't worry, your father and I have got you covered!
If you're upset about anything, you must tell us."
Melanie's eyes brimmed with tears.
This time, she wouldn't repeat the past mistakes.
