Ryan doesn't yet know that I'm dead.
He only realized I had blocked him when he messaged me about my post-graduation plans.
Aware of my peculiar nature and that Jasmine was my only close friend in college, he came to her.
I floated midair, watching him approach Jasmine.
"Can you get in touch with Grace?" Ryan asked, his tone both polite and distant.
Jasmine looked at him, biting her lip, her expression one of hesitancy.
He added, "You might have seen me before; I'm Grace's brother, Ryan."
"Grace said you're not her brother," Jasmine blurted out, then quickly covered her mouth, a look of regret flashing across her face.
Ryan was visibly stunned.
After a moment, he calmly asked, "What else has she said about me?"
"Grace said she hates you. She was relieved to finally graduate and wanted to stay as far away from you as possible, hoping never to see you again," Jasmine paused,
"...she also said your father killed her mother, and that you two were enemies."
"She only wished you would die soon."
That's not true.
It's not like that.
I desperately wanted to refute Jasmine.
But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't make a sound.
Ryan listened quietly.
His long eyelashes fluttered, like a butterfly poised to fly, concealing all his emotions.
Perhaps he recalled our argument outside the old house on my birthday.
I had also said, "If you died, I'd pop champagne to celebrate."
At that thought, I suddenly paused in midair.
A tide of regret washed over me.
It's not like that, brother.
I was just scared you'd see through my hidden, disgraceful thoughts.
You already despised me enough.
I didn't want to feel even more humiliated.
His face paled. After a moment, Ryan finally said, a faint smile curving his lips. He asked Jasmine,"...I know she always hated me.Could you please keep in touch with me periodically and let me know how Grace is doing?" Jasmine appeared hesitant.
He added gently, "Don't tell her. I just want to make sure she's safe."
Jasmine readily agreed.
That had always been her intention.
For convenience, Ryan arranged for her to work at Rivers Corporation.
I watched her use my phone to send herself a message.
She visited Ryan daily after work.
She fabricated a lie that I had found a job in another city and was doing well.
Having lived with me for four years in college, she knew me thoroughly.
She also had the aid of the system.
Ryan never seemed to question her statements.
Half a month later, Jasmine informed him:
"Grace mentioned she's recently met a man she likes, and they've started dating."
Ryan froze in his chair.
After a moment, he slowly exhaled, stood up, and walked toward the door.
Pausing briefly, he turned back:
"Did she tell you what kind of person he is?"
