I couldn't process it all, perhaps never would in this lifetime.
"It's all in the past. Don't dwell on it. Let's cherish the present, okay?"
Evan cupped my face, forehead against mine.
"How can I cherish the present, Evan, when your father died because of mine?"
Today, I understood his resentment. Among countless reasons, I never imagined such ugliness.
Evan explained, "No, my father died of cancer, not from the beating. Those were insignificant wounds."
I refused to accept it. "Stop covering for them."
When I stood by my dad's bedside, he already sensed that I knew all the truth.
"Do you understand everything now?" he asked.
"You must have hoped I'd never find out. Now I understand why your condition worsened repeatedly. It is a karma for what you did."
My stepmother still defended him. "Hannah, don't say that about your father. He regrets it. He wanted you to marry someone he knew well. He afraid you'd be wronged."
I sneered. "Marrying someone I don't love isn't a wrong? Your love for me was hurting those I love."
"Stop calling me to complain or seek sympathy. If you had any conscience, you wouldn't have called Evan. His father is long gone, yet you enjoy the best medical care, sleep on a million-dollar mattress, even dictate to Evan. He's a man, and every time he faces you, his heart must ache, knowing how you treated his father like vermin."
"I'm sorry, Hannah. I was wrong. I don't dare ask for your forgiveness, but my only wish now is for you and Evan to remain unaffected by the past, to live happily in the future."
"You were innocent and had no part of the scheme. It was my wrong way of loving you. Let me bear the karma."
"There's no undoing in life. Once happiness is shattered, it can't be pieced back together." Bitter tears welled in my eyes.
"Did you still want Evan and me to live happily? How cruel can you be? Do you want his father to turn in the grave?"
