Chapter 16

　　Mrs. Harrison exits first.
　　I take a call and only then leave the restroom.
　　At the door of the room, Evan stands, seemingly waiting for me.
　　"Are you feeling unwell? Should I tell them we're leaving?"
　　I glance inside; it seems the gathering is nearing its end.
　　"I'm fine. Let's go together once it wraps up."
　　Half an hour later, the dinner concludes.
　　At the hotel entrance, everyone says their goodbyes and departs in their vehicles.
　　On our way home, my gaze drifts to a roadside hotel.
　　"Drop me here, I'll stay at a hotel tonight. Meet at the court at eight tomorrow."
　　"But it's the weekend; the court won't be open."
　　I promptly check my phone, realizing my oversight—tomorrow is indeed the weekend.
　　"Go home instead."
　　My frustration bursts forth. "Evan, can't you respect me? Is it amusing to have me dance to your tune all day?"
　　He pauses, then lifts his head.
　　"If anyone should stay at a hotel, it should be me. The house was carefully designed by you; it should be yours."
　　"I'll take you back first."
　　That evening, he keeps his word, driving me to my garage before departing.
　　Yet, the next morning, as I descend to buy breakfast, his car sits parked downstairs.
　　I divert my gaze and head upstairs.
　　He opens the car door and steps out.
　　"Dad called me last night; it's his birthday today, and he wants us to join him for dinner."
　　"We don't have to go."
　　"Dad's heart has acted up twice now. He really wants to see you."
　　I clutch my soy milk tighter, hastening my ascent.
　　"I'll wait downstairs."
　　Inside, my phone rings again.
　　I hang up.
　　It buzzes twice more.
　　"Hannah, just come for dinner, okay? I had your stepmother cooked all your favorites."
　　"I've been diagnosed with pulmonary edema again, among other things. I might not have many years left to live."
　　"I know I wronged your mother; your resentment is justified. But Dad still cares for you.I wants to see if Evan treats you well, if you're unhappy."
　　I switch off my phone and cast it aside.
