Midway through the dinner, I excused myself to the restroom, splashing cold water on my face.
Mrs. Harrison entered, smiling at me. "Mrs. Harrison," I nodded first.
"It's been a while since I met you last time. You've lost some weight."
Mrs. Harrison patted my shoulder. "Can you tell me, what's really going on between you and Dr. Smith? The girl who used to light up looking at Dr. Smith seems to have lost her spark."
I knew Mrs. Harrison cared about our relationship. "Mrs. Harrison, we have no feelings left between us."
Her mouth gaped in surprise before she pondered for a moment.
"I may not know the specifics, but I can tell he cares about you deeply. When you were in that car accident, whenever he wasn't on an external assignment, he'd spend his nights at the hospital by your side. Especially during your time in ICU, he would sleep on the edge of your bed."
"When you were brought in after the accident, he was in another state accompanying the hospital director for a surgical exchange program. Upon hearing about your car accident, he immediately rushed out of the meeting room and hurried back. Because of this incident, he was publicly criticized and demoted."
I was utterly stunned. He had stayed by my side while I was unconscious?
Mrs. Harrison sighed. "I don't understand either. Despite caring for you so much, he never visited when you were awake. Several times, My husband was on night shift, and I visited the department, passing your ward, only to see him keeping vigil by your bedside."
Mrs. Harrison patted my shoulder again. "Don't rush to decide. Perhaps there's a misunderstanding between you two that needs resolving."
