Arriving at the airport, I took out my phone and deleted the contact at the top of the list. I exited the class group chat.
I headed to a small city. That evening, after landing, I went to my cousin who was raising a child alone.
"Mommy, it's Auntie." My cousin emerged from the kitchen, eyeing my luggage.
"Did you argue with your husband?"
"We're over."
"But you loved him so much?"
I forced a bitter smile. "Love requires reciprocity. One-sided efforts are merely self-indulgence and might even become a burden to the other person."
"You finally understand that, silly girl. He wasn't worth it."
In the middle of the night, I was insomnia-stricken, sitting on the windowsill, staring at the road below.
A sound came from behind me. "Why aren't you asleep yet?"
"Insomnia, I'll sleep soon." My cousin hugged me, touching my forehead.
"Why is life so tough for you? Your dream was to be a surgeon, but you injured your finger. Then you met someone you liked, only to find out they were a heartless person."
I stared blankly at the streetlights outside. "You know, if he hated me so much, why did he marry me? I really don't understand."
"I didn't force him to marry me."
"Forget about it, move on, live well."
"Yes, I've decided to forget. I plan to settle down here and open a pharmacy."
"Great, do you need a business partner? I'll invest."
"I do." We shared a smile.
Half a year later, the pharmacy successfully opened. My cousin and I took turns managing the store.
Life in this small city was slow-paced, and with time, many things in my memory faded gradually. ...
