"Oh dear, why is the blood flowing backward?" The caregiver who brought my meal exclaimed, noticing the blood in the IV tubing connected to my hand.
Turning, I saw the segment near the needle filled with my blood.
The caregiver promptly pressed the call button.
The nurse who responded was Lili, who is my high school classmate.
Her impatience was palpable as she roughly tore off the adhesive tape, yanking out the needle.
Back then, few in our class refrained from secretly labeling me a 'scheming vixen', cruel, and bullying under protection behind my back.
After changing the tube, she left without a word.
Both the caregiver and the neighboring lady couldn't bear it.
The caregiver lifted the food tray, preparing to feed me, remarking, "She must be having a bad day."
"No, I've noticed, she’s particularly bad towards... the young lady. When my husband needed a dressing change, her attitude was ok," the lady commented.
I didn't comment further, merely stating, "Fetch me a small table. Put the food on it; I'll eat by myself."
With my right hand in a cast, only my left was functional.
In the past, I wouldn't have let Lili's behavior slide, but now, I felt too drained to argue.
When Evan entered the room, I was awkwardly attempting to eat, bound up like a tightly wrapped mummy.
Using my left hand to eat was unfamiliar territory for me.
When I was trying to scoop my food, my motion froze in mid-air upon his arrival.
I must have looked utterly disheveled in that instant. His gaze swept over me briefly before settling on the man in the neighboring bed.
"What's going on here?" ...It turned out he was visiting the patient next bed.
I lowered my head, mechanically continuing to feed myself, feeling numb all over my body.
"Doctor, you're here! My husband says his elbow suddenly started hurting a lot."
Evan loosened the cast on the man's arm. "Does that feel better?"
"Yes, much better. Not as painful now."
The lady wondered, "Did we get a new doctor? Wasn't it Dr. Harrison before?"
"He had a family matter to attend to, so I'm covering for him for a couple of days."
"Ah, I see. Young man, you look really young to be a doctor at A Hospital. This hospital is among the top of our state. It is quite impressive."
"Do you have a girlfriend?" Evan side-stepped the lady's inquiry. "The cast was tied too tight, putting pressure on the elbow, causing the pain. If this happens again, call for the doctor immediately."
After attending to the man, he seemed reluctant to leave.
I kept my head down, robotically continuing my meal.
As a pair of white shoes appeared beside my bed, a nurse rushed in.
"Dr. Smith, there's an emergency." The white shoes that had momentarily caught my eye disappeared once more. I stared into the darkness outside, sniffing slightly.
