That night, as I took Xander to the hotel, he pressed me against the car when we were about to board.
"There's still an empty room available."
"But there's no bed, nor any new bedding," he said.
Xander leaned in to kiss me. "There are too many people around, we could be seen..."
"Tell me you miss me, Jenna, say you think about me every day."
Xander didn't care, his kisses growing deeper. I shook my head, unwilling to speak or admit. More than daily, I thought of him every moment, incessantly. Yet, I didn’t want him to know.
He said Serena wasn't his first love. But he hadn't explained their supposed engagement or why Serena had returned with him to the villa that night.
"But I do miss you, Jenna, every day and night."
Xander gave me a deep look and embraced me in another kiss. I heard the laughter of children in the night breeze. My hands couldn’t break free, but I managed to lightly kick Xander's leg, reminding him people were approaching.
In the thick of the night, his eyes shimmered with desire and tenderness. My heart raced, and my limbs felt weak. Between breaths, I murmured his name: "Xander..."
"Actually... I've been back to New York."
"I know..."
"You knew?"
Xander lifted his hand to wipe a droplet from my lip: "At that time, I didn't realize it was you."
I grew even more astonished. "It must be the after-effects of the accident, I forgot some things," he said casually, yet I couldn't hold back my tears.
I had noticed the scar on his brow during the day.
It had been a long time, yet the faint mark remained.
I dared not think about how horrific that scene had been.
"From the day you returned, I started to slowly regain my memory."
"I should have come for you and Jasmine sooner, but I had many things to resolve in New York so you both could return without worries."
Xander bent down and kissed away my tears.
"Come back to New York with me. Let's get married, Jenna."
