At the villa, Serena tried to support a drunken Xander, but he brushed her hand away.
"Lincoln, arrange for the driver to take Miss Nash home," he commanded without glancing at Serena, his steps shaky as he headed toward the house. His assistant hurried to help, and this time, Xander did not resist.
Serena stood behind him, her heart aching. She couldn't understand what had gone wrong.
After her return, it seemed natural that Xander would resume pursuing her and eventually marry her, even undeterred by her inability to have children.
Yet, two years had passed, and Xander's feelings for her had not deepened beyond friendship.
Moreover, if not her steadfast care for him during the days of rehabilitation after his car accident, his demeanor towards her might have been even colder.
Disappointed, Serena got into the car. Xander, meanwhile, went directly upstairs.
The house had been redecorated during the time he was hospitalized following last year's accident.
The master bedroom's layout and furnishings were completely changed.
Xander dismissed his assistant and sat on the sofa briefly before rising to walk to the storage room in the suite.
It contained many of Serena's belongings, items from when they had lived together before his accident—she was his girlfriend, his first love.
This was what he had been told when he regained consciousness.
Serena confirmed it, claiming they were meant to be together and she would inevitably become his wife.
However, despite Serena's excellence and beauty, he did not dislike her but nor did he feel love for her.
Feeling the alcohol's heat, he loosened his tie and carelessly placed it on the dresser, accidentally knocking over a box.
Inside were two thumb-sized wooden figurines, a little boy holding a girl's hand.
Xander picked it up and was about to set it back.
But he paused when he take a loot at it.
At the base of the figurine, there was a small inscription: "Jenna likes Xander very much."
