If anyone had told me that a day like this would come when I would be madly in love with a man, ready to tear down anyone who tried to tear him down, I would have laughed it off and possibly called that person a prick. If someone had told me that on a day like this, I would be ready to break my own heart for the man I love, I would have told them to fuck off. But no one had to tell me any of those. It was already happening. I could feel it. I could see it and smell it. All of this was real and there was no turning back now.
I watched the party about to get started from the rooftop of the exquisite suite they had rented for the event. Prominent men and women from all walks of life were gathered here and if you'd only look at the view, you would see a perfect gathering. But if you looked farther, then the truth would be easier to spot. My phone buzzed from my purse and I took it out. It was Connor.
I picked the receiver, keeping firm the stoic expression on my face.
"Kenz."
"Hey."
He sighed. "Are you sure about this?"
I nodded, even though my inside was a little unsure of why I am doing all of this and wondering if there could have been some other way that I did not think about.
"Yes."
"I will be proposing in a few minutes."
"Okay."
I was about to cut the call when his voice came again.
"Kenzie..."
"Yea." My finger hung on the receiver, waiting for the right moment to end the call.
"I trust you."
I smiled a weak faint smile. "I know."
And then, I cut the call. I swallowed the trepidation that hung in my throat and with a shaky hand, I dialled another number.
When the receiver picked up the call, I said without delay.
"It's time."
..........................
CONNOR
I stared down at my wristwatch as I sat beside Jessica at the large banquet.
The event was already happening and yet, I hadn't seen any of Kenzie's plans unfold. I wondered if all of this was a setup to get me to marry Jessica.
I slapped myself inwardly. I was just overreacting.
A continuous click of glass at the centre of the stage drew everyone's attention, causing an anticipating silence. It was my father, clicking his wine glass with a spoon. When he saw that he had gotten everyone's attention, he smiled a self-satisfactory smile and my insides knotted irritatedly at the man who was supposed to be my father but instead, a selfish man who was willing to sacrifice his son for his gain.
He looked in my direction and gave me a go-ahead eye signal that caused my blood to run cold in my veins. It was the signal to propose.
I was delayed by a few seconds, my eyes carefully searching around for any sign of Kenzie. I could hear the crowd begin to murmur as they waited for whatever my father had dragged their attention for.
My hand felt the small cubic box in my breast pocket. It was the engagement ring my mother had given to me this morning. A family heirloom, she had called it. My father's great-grandfather had passed it to my grandfather who in turn passed it to my father who in turn passed it to me. I wondered if all any of them ever cared about was the diamond ring and if they ever were in love with the women they married.
I finally rose from my seat and faced Jessica, slowly getting on a knee, aware of the hundreds of eyes watching me. As I pulled out the small velvet box and carefully flipped it open to expose the shining diamond ring, they all gasped, now getting the idea of the whole thing.
From the corner of my eyes, I noticed people pull out their phones and cameras, ready and positioned to take recordings of the moment.
Jessica gasped and a hand covered her mouth in feigned surprise. My insides burned in irritation at her acts. Was this not what she and her family had planned with my parents for months? What was the use of faking surprise?
"Jessica Brooks." I began, a fake smile on my face covering my burning heart.
Where the fuck are you, Kenz?
"Will you do the honours of marrying me?"
Kenzie!
Jessica had fake tears in her eyes now and I heard a bit of 'awws' and 'ohhhs' from the crowd.
"Oh, my goodness. Yes, Connor. Yes, I will marry you." Jessica answered and flung herself to me in an embrace, and the crowd clapped and whistled in cheer.
The light suddenly went off and everybody in the room murmured in confusion, taking their attention away from our small show to the cause of the power outage. I rose from my knee and Jessica got up from her seat too, wrapping her hand around mine as she cursed lowly.
The power came back the next second and standing on the stage with a black gown that overflowed from behind her, carrying an aura of doom was no other than the only girl who could pull a stunt like this.
Kenzie.
