For wealthy people like Connor, the world was sure to hear of his upcoming engagement party. The engagement party between two prominent wealthy families. It was the talk of the town the entire week. Connor and Jessica even made a public appearance at an event together, smiling and holding hands, confirming the rumour was true and wasn't just baseless.
If only they knew just how much time it had taken me to convince Connor to do this and how much planning we had put into deceiving them all into seeing something that wasn't even there at all. I should give myself a trophy for how easy it was for me to manipulate and control people.
Tory had stopped by the house a day after the announcement had gone viral and I had stayed in my room all the while she was there, hearing her quarrel with Conor. If I was still as ignorant as I was the first time I had met her, I would have thought Tory was a concerned lover who was caught up in all this drama. But I knew better now. Enough to know that she had run here out of fear.
She was afraid that her plans were crumbling down.
A day before the party, I scheduled a lunch with Zed in the same Café where I had made my first deal with Conor. And the same table too.
Soon, I was rejoined by Zed who gave me a playful punch and a bright smile before taking his seat in front of me. My heart broke for the boy who had allowed his greed to get the most out of his kind heart.
"What's up, sis?" He drank from my can of soda and I beat his hand, causing him to almost spill the drink on his fine suit. He laughed and dropped it back. "You don't have to be so aggressive, you know."
He ordered a cup of cappuccino and got his order a minute later.
"So..., what's with the urgent meeting?" He drank from his coffee. "Tell me it's not about Connor's engagement with Jessie?"
"Maybe." I simply answered and looked him steady into the eyes.
"What happened to the girl you used to love?"
His laughter died down gradually and he cleared his throat and sipped from his coffee, refusing to meet my eyes.
He was about to lie.
"She left."
"She left you?"
He nodded and I could see him shift uncomfortably in his seat.
"Why?"
"I don't know." He met my stern gaze and quickly looked away again.
"Do you miss her?"
"No. Yes. Sometimes. I am sure you know I'm seeing someone else now." His forehead creased. "Why are asking me these questions?"
I shrugged again and drank from my can of soda. "I don't know. Idle curiosity maybe." I looked back at him, my gaze was more intense. "Or maybe I was just wondering how you had managed to get such a high position at the company you work with, without a connection from the inside."
"Of course, there had to be a connection from the inside. Connor..."
"Did she help you get in?"
My question seemed to render him breathless now and I smirked and continued.
"Did she help you get the job so that you can both work from the inside?"
His gaze finally locked on me now and his jaw tightened.
Bingo. 0
"You know..., I always knew you were a smart person, Kenz. But you should keep your nose out of this." He sounded like he was warning me but I was not the slightest way shaken. I knew Zed like the back of my palms. He could only bark but never bite.
And he was sure not the mastermind behind all of this. He was not smart enough.
But she was.
"It's a funny tale, you know. Two lovers trying to get their hands on the properties of a rich heir. It would interest the newspapers, I reckon."
"What do you want, Kenzie?" He had fear in his eyes and I laughed a small laugh. Knowing Zed well enough, I knew he would never like the idea of going to jail.
That was the perfect plan up my sleeves.
"To warn you." I leaned closer and lowered my voice. "Do you think Tory is as dumb as you are? Do you think she is going to dump Connor and take his properties and flee with you, her everlasting lover? Did you buy into the ridiculous idea she fed you?"
He swallowed and watched me both in fear and anticipation.
"What did you find out?'
"I have been in this game with you for years, Zed. You should've known better than falling for a small trick."
"Don't stop. Keep talking." His voice was a little shaky now and I felt the urge to slap him right across the face for being so dumb and clueless.
"She is going to frame you, Zed. She is not planning on divorcing her husband when they get married." I smirked at his reaction. "She is going to kill him and frame you, her lover, for it."
I saw his eyes turn glazy and his lips slacked. He didn't know of Tory's real plan.
"Now, is this how much a sacrifice you can make to get what you want?" I played with my fingers around the rim of his coffee mug in circular motions. "Unlike you, Zed. I have learned the truth and I am following my heart now. The only thing I am ready to sacrifice is anybody who gets in my way. I will sacrifice anyone who tries to tear my heart apart."
I let the nostalgia sink into him and pulled out a small note in my purse and pushed it towards him.
"I am giving you one last chance to make this all right. And when you do, you know where to find me."
