CONNOR
"Hello, brother."
Summer was the first to welcome me as I walked into the living room of my parents' mansion. She returned her attention to her phone again, sitting cross-legged on the couch like a queen bee. A smile crossed my face and I pulled her in a tight hug, knowing fully well how she hated having any form of human contact with anyone.
"Get off me." She tried to struggle from my hold but I held her even tighter and laughed.
"Mom!" She yelled and I let her go, aware that our mother would come running here in the next second to protect her precious daughter.
"How's it going, grumpy?"
She huffed and dusted invincible specks of dirt off her dress. The dirt was obviously...me.
How Hilarious.
"You know, you gotta fix that attitude of yours or you're never getting a boyfriend." I crossed my arms over my chest and stared at her.
Summer shot me a glare and returned to her seat, cross-legged again and focused on her phone.
"And who says I don't?"
I raised my brows in disbelief. "Don't what?"
She clicked her tongue. "Have a boyfriend."
My eyes shot open. A part of me was in shock and disbelief and the other part of me was in pity for the victim in place of Summer's supposed boyfriend.
"No fucking way."
"Language, Conor. Language." My mother's footsteps joined us from the stairs.
"Summer's got a boyfriend?" I asked my mother as she advanced toward us.
The look on mom's face proved to me that she was also clueless about Summer's supposed new boyfriend.
"Summer?" Mom looked at her questioningly and Summer rose from her seat and faced us, a rude look on her face. She shoved her phone to my face and I jerked my head backwards to avoid collision with her precious baby.
"Him!" She said, her voice pitched high. "He is my boyfriend, okay?"
I laughed. Of course, she did not have one. Not the Summer I knew.
"And even if I had one, none of you is ever going to meet him because I would not have anyone telling me who to love and who not to love."
"Summer!" Mom's tone contained a strong warning and the laugh on my face gradually dissolved.
She was referring to my love life.
Summer looked at me, with a long pathetic look. "Do you even know why mom and dad invited you over all of a sudden? Do you?"
"Summer!" Mom's warning was critical now and Summer only laughed it off.
"What is she saying, mom?" I turned my attention to my mother now. This was no longer a joke. Something was going on that I had no idea about.
"The Brooks and our family have decided to fix your engagement party with their daughter next weekend."
I turned my head to see my father coming down the stairs, his aged but healthy physique was large and intimidating. He did not show a smile and I knew he was serious. But I went ahead and scoffed out a laugh in disbelief.
"Jessica?" I asked, already knowing the answer.
"Yes, Connor. Your engagement with Jessica Brooks" He came face to face with me, our height measuring to the same level. "I have been brought to the notice that you have been playing too many games around in my absence. It is high time we cut the chase and go straight to business."
My ears wheezed as he talked and I glanced at my Mother and Summer, wondering how this was a setup that I didn't see coming. Summer had raged in her now watery eyes and her fists were clenched. My mother's face bore no expression and looked at me, stoic and hard.
I looked back at my father, his own eyes cold and challenging.
"Does it even matter to you if I love her or not?" My voice sounded weak and powerless in my ears.
"It doesn't matter, Connor." My mother joined my father and stood beside him. Now, I did not see two parents in front of me. I could only see two dominating leaders who had sworn to ruin my life. "When I married your father, I knew nothing about love. Now, I am grateful every single day for choosing to be with him." She took my father's hands in hers and he squeezed them gently.
I could see that I had been blocked in every corner I turned to and I looked at Summer with pleading eyes.
"Help me, Summer. Talk to them. They'll listen to you."
But Summer did not budge and a tear slipped down her cheeks. I blinked my wet eyes back, promising myself to remain strong in front of them. I would never give them the satisfaction of seeing me suffer.
Remembering the one last thing that put me a step ahead of them, a new feeling of hope rushed through me. This was the right time to use what I had to my advantage.
"She is pregnant. Ari is carrying my child."
Everywhere went silent and just when I had thought I had won, my mother's voice comes, final and authoritative.
"Then we will take it out." She began to lead my father back upstairs. "I will schedule an appointment for her to meet with Doctor Issa first thing tomorrow morning."
I did not know why I was still surprised at the things my parents did or said. But realizing they would go as far as killing my child to get what they wanted was the scariest discovery.
"I hate this family!" Summer's yelled after them and I heard her cry from behind me.
"Do you even care about my happiness, both of you?" I asked them, my voice broken and shaky. But my parents ignored me and continue to walk away like two evil rulers.
"I love her!" I yelled at them, knowing fully well that whatever I said I did right now would not change anything. I tried to remember when it was that my parents changed this much. Why did they allow whatever it was that changed them, to change them this much?
Mom stopped to her heels and looked at me, a fake pity look on her face.
"Love is not all that matters, son."
"I will not marry Jessica," I stressed my words, letting the rage in me fuel in.
"Then you will cease to be a part of this family." My father's looked at me, cold, unflinching and full of confidence.
