I was sure Connor must have noticed the way I stole glances at him and watched him secretly. He had caught my gaze when he was making breakfast, when he was watching his favourite tv show and when he was dressing in his room and I knocked to ask if he wanted to have a glass of juice. This time, he did not answer me immediately and stared at me instead intently causing me to look away in sheer embarrassment.
"Kenzie Seattle. Are you desperately head over heels in love with my gorgeous body that you want to utilize every opportunity you get to watch me naked?"
My eyes widened and I looked back at him, an incredulous look written all over my face.
What the fuck?
He grinned. "Don't look so shocked, sweetheart. I will not shame you..."
I kicked him with full force on his knee and he yelped and crunched, holding his knee in exaggerated pain.
"Come on!"
I ran away before he could catch me and I entered my room, banging the door shut behind me.
That asshole. What did he think he is? Son of Zeus?
"If you didn't want me to be so vocal about it, then don't make your obsession for me too obvious!" He shouted after me and his groans followed from the pain I had inflicted on him.
I clenched my fist and grounded my teeth. I should've hit him harder.
"And what did you run away for? I would have taken vengeance on those pretty legs of yours."
When he came out of the room again a few minutes later, he was dressed in a plain shirt and dark jeans. He stopped and stared at me longer as he saw me.
I munch on my mouthful of popcorn nervously. Shit. What was he going to do to me now?"
"You little..." He bit back his words and stared at me with hate. "You have the heart to eat my popcorn after breaking my goddamed knee, don't you?"
I gulped the chewed popcorn down my throat. "I don't see any dislocation."
He clicked his tongue irritatedly and staggered closer to me until he was directly in front of me and disturbing my view of the television show I was watching.
I was sure it wasn't even a real stagger. He was faking it.
He raised his jeans high up to his knee and shoves his leg to my face. It smelled like coconut and baby oil.
I faked a disgusted sound at the smell of his feet and threw my face away.
"That stinks bro."
He stares at me in total disbelief and I had to stop myself from laughing at how dramatic he was acting now.
"You are shit, Kenz." He rolled down his pants again and walked away from me, advancing towards the door.
Wait...was he leaving finally? My insides leapt with joy.
As if reading my thoughts, he said as he turned the doorknob open. "I have a meeting with an old friend. I'll be home late."
I threw a balloon party inside of me.
"Oh." I feigned indifference.
"Would you like me to get you something on my way back?"
That caught me off guard and I stammered."Uh..."
He grinned. "You don't have to think too much. I'm not spending thousands of dollars on basic stuff."
Uh. Here we go again with the arrogance.
"Chicken nuggets." I finally said and he nodded and finally leaves.
When I was sure he had left completely, I hurried to my room and dressed up in a comfy sweatshirt and jeans. I glanced at the clock.
2:45 PM.
I still had fifteen minutes to make it to my outing with Suzy.
...................
I snuck out of the house to the coffee shop knowing fully well that Connor would never let me off on my own ever since the incident with Ryan.
And I wasn't planning to let him know either. I savoured my drink of caramel macchiato and baguette sandwich as I read the magazine in my hands. There was a page about Stars World Agency with Connor on the front cover in her never tiring tuxedo and dishevelled sexy hair that gave him the aura of a rugged CEO. I bit my lips and let my eyes travel down his frame in the photo. Those places in his body I had touched and felt and tasted. The sweetness of it all.
"Hey." I raised my eyes to Suzy in front of me, looking good in a pair of dark mom's jeans and a flowery blouse. She took off her sunglasses and smiled at me as she drew a seat and sat in front of me.
"Hi."
"So... did he let out or you wandered off on your own?" She asked, beckoning for the waiter to come.
"Let's just keep this a secret between us. He's going to fry me alive if he finds out I left the house without telling him." I answered and she laughed. I laughed too. I couldn't believe how comfortable I was beginning to get around her. I was beginning to like her non-judgemental aura and her openness. The big sister vibes.
Was I the same way with Jojo?
"How's mom?" I asked and she threw a surprised stare at me. I was sure she didn't believe I was making use of that word already.
The waiter brought her orders and that was what brought her back to reality.
"Oh...uh...mom. She's fine." She arranged her tray before her, putting her cup of espresso coffee beside the toast and jam. "She's home. Recovering. She sent me a message to you."
I looked on expectantly and Suzy decided to take a long sip of her drink before answering me. She moaned as she savoured the taste and I was sure she was intently doing this to irritate me.
"She wants us to have a family dinner together. The three of us. Jojo too. She is asking if you can make it."
"Okay. I'll be there. When is it?" I bite from my baguette and overlooked the way her eyes lingered on me, visibly surprised at my answer.
"Tomorrow night."
"Okay." I shrugged and continued to eat.
"May I ask why you're being weirdly nice to me today?"
I tried to push back a smile. "Am I now?"
"You know you are."
"I don't." I enjoyed the fact that it was my turn to enjoy the tease just like she tried to do earlier.
"Bro. Being nice looks fucking weird on you." She remarked, taking another sip of her coffee.
I frowned and kept my eyes on her this time. "How is that? From all I've heard, my identical twin was probably one of the nicest people in the world. Just try to imagine her face in mine and stop complaining.
"Fuck you." She cursed with a laugh and I joined in but her laughter died as soon as it began and she fixated her gaze behind me, looking expectantly and intently. Curiosity got a better hold of me and I looked in the direction she was looking there was a teenage girl in transculent brown hair with a dark-haired boy, a few years older, picking their orders.
My eyes twitched at the sight and I felt slightly on edge.
Jojo.
Jojo's gaze met mine as her eyes scrutinized the sight of the cafeteria. A small frown crossed her face and she held her gaze on me a few seconds longer. I threw a small acknowledging smile her way and she walked over to us, her arms crossed rudely over her bosom.
"Hi, Kenzie." She greeted me and shifted her gaze to Suzy, stern and rude. "Hi, Kenzie's sister."
I felt a stinge in my heart and I could hear the jealousy and spite in her tone. I felt bad instantly. I could not blame her for whatever she did. I had been so busy with Miranda and Suzy to have time for my little sister. It was all my fault.
"Jojo," I said to her and she only stared back at me, the cold looks in her eyes already shutting me up from saying another word. I glanced over in the boy's direction. Why wasn't she with Jason?
"How have you been, Jojo? It has been a while." Suzy kept her smile hanging as she spoke to Jojo kindly but Jojo only rolled her eyes at her and flicked her long hair like one of the mean queen bees in a high school drama.
"Please...call me Carla. Jojo is a name only reserved for friends and families."
Suzy nodded and smiled. "Alright then, Carla. My mom is having dinner at her place tomorrow night. We hope you can make it."
Jojo looked at her as if Suzy had gone mental. I cringe inwardly too.
Like...couldn't you see this girl was still visibly angry and jealous? Now was not the right time to push a dinner invite.
A rude smile crossed Jojo's face now, replacing her surprised look. "You bet I'll be there. I wouldn't miss it for anything in the world."
I looked on at her, taken aback by her response as I ransacked my brain, trying to find a million reasons why she would agree to Miranda's invitation.
"Have fun, you two." She threw me a daring smile and bounced off. My eyes trailed behind her as she rejoined the boy who now had his both hands full with their orders. When we both locked eyes, he offered me a smile and Jojo pulled him away with her, leaving the cafeteria.
I sighed trying to understand why she had accepted the invitation. What was she planning?
