When we finally reached our hotel room, Kenzie was almost asleep. Dropping her weight gently to the bed, I arranged her head on the pillow. I drew the blanket over her body and when I was about to get up and leave, her small warm feminine hands held me back by the wrist and I turned to see her eyes half open as she struggled to keep them from shutting.
"Don't go." She said, her tone weak and drunk. "Lie down next to me."
I stared at her, surprised and sceptical. Why would she want me to sleep on her bed? And what if woke up the next morning and accused me of taking advantage of her drunken state?
I knew too well how judgemental and dramatic Kenzie could be.
"Please." She added, pulling me by the heartstrings. I sighed in surrender and gently put my weight on the bed, lying my frame closely next to her. She continued to watch me, the coffee and milk colour of her eyes, gentle and vulnerable this time. I admired its true beauty devoid of her coldness and the fire she had always brewed in them. Right now, the hearth was quenched of its embers and I enjoyed the afterglow effect.
"Sing me a song." She said, her eyes still struggling between keeping open and shutting closing shut.
"Okay." I laughed gently and wrapped my arms around her in a gentle cuddle. I pat her back calmly.
Had she always wanted to hear me sing since the day Jason spoke about it at the dining?
"What kind of song?"
"I don't know. Any song. I am a huge fan of Alec Benjamin."
I was a little surprised at her choice of the artist. Deep inside, I could tell she was a soft-hearted person. All of these were just cold walls and fortresses she had built around herself.
"Sing me his song." She added.
I sighed. "I know a few of his songs. Just a few. Can I sing you my favourite?"
She nodded. "Yes, please."
I continued to pat her back and I took in a gentle breath. Here we go.
I heard glass shatter on the wall of the apartment above mine.
At first, I thought that I was dreaming.
But then, I heard the voice of a girl and it sounded like she had been crying
Now I'm too worried to be sleeping.
So I took the elevator to the second floor.
Walked down the hall and then I knocked up on her door
She opened up and I asked her about the things that I'd been hearing.
She said...
I think your ears are playing tricks on you
The sweater zipped up to her chin
Thanks for caring sir, that's nice of you
But I have to go back in
Wish I can tell you about the noise but I didn't hear a thing.
She said it have been the wind, must have been the wind, must have been the wind, it must have been the wind.
She said it must have been the wind, must have been the wind, must have been the wind, it must have been the wind.
