"I used to call you my lucky star. My good luck charms. You were there for me in my highs and lows and I knew that no matter what happens, I will always stand strong because I have you. Where are you now?" He sniffled back tears with a handkerchief. "What will I ever do without you? Why would you choose to leave me this way? What happened to our promise of a happily ever after?" A man standing beside him placed a supportive hand over Ryan's shoulder as he finally broke down in tears.
Liar.
I watched the small gathering of mourners in all-black trying to hold back their tears. From a corner, Mrs Meyer, summer and Jason were seated, with Mrs Meyers in dark sunglasses.
A warm strong hand squeezed mine in support and I looked at Connor who offered me a small smile. I clamped my hand around his in turn.
Later, we escorted the crowd to where Kelly's body would be buried. After her body got levelled into the grave, I lingered a little longer, unafraid that Ryan was there too. Connor had insisted on keeping an eye on me and with his presence standing right by my side, I wasn't afraid one bit.
"I am so sorry Kelly," I said in my heart. "I can never forgive myself for walking away from you when I should've helped. I hope you find peace wherever you are now." A blinked back tears from escaping my eyes and I signalled to Connor that I wanted to leave. He took my hand and led me away and as we entered his car, his mother called out to him from outside.
"Connor."
"Hey, mom."
"Can I speak to you for a minute?"
Connor hesitated and looked at me. I nodded and he finally sighed and got off the car. He walked to his mother and they strolled some distance away as they talked.
I sighed and leaned my weight on the chair. Ryan was such a prick. I was so sure everyone was moved by his act of display today and no one would ever believe he treated Kelly like trash or that he had a hand in her death.
My phone beeped as a notification came in and I opened the message box to see a text from Miranda.
Would you like to meet today?
5 pm at Evergreen Park.
I sighed again and texted back.
Sure.
Dropping the phone back, I looked outside the window and my eyes caught Ryan some distance away from our car, his phone pressed to his ears, his face passive and hard as he locked a cold gaze with me. My phone buzzed immediately and as I glanced at the unsaved caller ID, my heartbeat accelerated. I refused to pick up the call and looked back at him but the ringing persisted and with shaky hands, I slid the receiver and Ryan's hard voice came,
"Long time no see, Ari."
Instead of fear, it was anger and thirst for vengeance that clouded my expression.
"I know it wasn't suicide, Ryan." I wish I could see his face contort as I spoke. "You killed your wife."
He remained silent for a few seconds and I saw his lips stretched in a smile.
"Your fault, Kenzie. You never should have talked to her. Did you put the silly idea of running away in her head?"
I was right. He had caught and killed her when she tried to run away.
"You know...," His voice sounded pissed and impatient now. "I've had enough of your silly games. You either give me what I want or..."
"You cannot do shit, Ryan."
"What?" He sounded taken aback by my guts.
"You cannot do shit. I have evidence against you. Evidence that found you guilty of Steph's murder and assaulting your wife and finally killed her when she tried to escape from the devil disguised as her husband. And just one touch of a strand of hair, Ryan, and I will have the backed-up evidence released for the whole world to see."
"You will be dead meat."
"I know. I have nothing to lose but my life. You, on the other hand, stand to lose more than I would because your reputation and everything you have ever owned and worked for would be gone in a swish of a minute."
