I searched through the dancing crowd for Connor, as I glanced back every passing second to be sure Ryan was not following me. I finally caught sight of Connor backing against me, dancing with another woman. My heart clutched against my chest but I warned myself this was no time to be jealous.
"Connor." I reached for his arm and turned him around carelessly to face me and disappointment swept through me when I saw my mistake. The man was not Connor and was simply dressed in the same tux as him and they had the same physique and hair colour. The man looked at me in confusion and I gave a quick apology to him and the woman. Without spending an extra minute with them again, I walked away past them and continued my search for Connor.
Where the fuck are you?
A hand caught me by the wrist and turned me around to face him. My heart leapt and a scream threatened to escape from my mouth.
"Kenzie. Are you okay?" Connor asked, staring at me with a look of concern on his face.
I tried to catch my breath and tears weld up my eyes again. His frown deepened and he made to lead me to an empty seat but I shook my head, rooting my feet to the ground and stubbornly refusing to walk with him.
"No, Connor. Let's leave already."
"Why? What's happening?"
"He is here. Ryan is here. We have to leave." I tried to pull him with me out of the hall but he did not budge.
"Kenzie. Chill."
"I can't chill," I said between gritted teeth.
Why wasn't he even trying to understand me?
"He is going to hurt me."
"I already told you I would protect you. You have to calm down and stop causing a scene." He had a new look of irritation on his face now and I looked around at the scene he was talking about all I could see was people dancing, no one paying the slightest attention to us.
"Connor." I turned back my attention to him. "You have to listen to me. Please. We have to leave now."
"I can't. Maybe you should leave on your own but I am staying." He lowered his head to the ground, refusing to see the vulnerability in my eyes. "I have to be here for my family."
A tear escaped my eyes and I instantly wiped it off with my palms. I nodded at him.
"Okay." I released my hold on him and started to walk past the crowd.
"Fuck. Kenz. Where are you going to?" His voice called after me but I ignored him and walked on.
I wasn't going to leave my safety in the hands of someone like Connor.
.....................
The taxi dropped in front of Zed's apartment building and I cross-checked the address he had given to me the other day.
"We're here, ma'am." The cab man said and I brought out a few dollar notes in my purse and pressed it into his hand. Pushing the door of the cab open, I stepped out of the vehicle and the man wasted no time in driving off again. I gave the tall glass building one last look and a part of me wondered how Zed was able to afford this kind of luxury in just a short period.
I walked into the building and took the elevator to the fifth floor where his apartment was. Once I reached his apartment number, I brought my hand to press the doorbell but noticed that the door was left slightly ajar.
I sighed at Zed's carelessness. Typical Zed.
I walked in and shut the door slightly beside me. The living room was empty but the sharp corner that led to his bedroom had a half-opened door. I decided to frighten him with my presence so that next time, he would learn how easily he could be robbed or hurt if he had an enemy like Ryan.
I tiptoed and walked closer to the door, placing my hand to push it open but I stopped before I could do that, as a female voice came from within.
"I can't wait, you know." The voice sounded oddly familiar.
"Me neither. A whole year wait is excruciating." Zed's voice replied and I snuck a peek through the little space that left the door opened and the whole world came to a halt at the sight of Zed lying next to a strawberry-haired woman, both naked saved for the one piece of bedsheet that covered the lower parts of their bodies. I tried to convince myself that this was unreal and a mere joke but the sight before me looked too real to be a joke.
"She should be pregnant in a month." Tory traced her fingers down Zed's handsome face.
"Would she, though?" Zed caressed her lower back gently. "I can't help but feel Kenz would do anything but get pregnant for him. She is too smart to be used."
Tory smiled a smile that convinced me she was more dangerous to play with than Jessica.
Unpredictable and deceitful.
"I know. But she likes him. It's obvious. Anything can happen." She planted a kiss on his lips. "And when that one thing happens and she eventually leaves, giving Connor to me once again, you know what will happen."
"It's me and you together." She kissed him again on repeat. "Forever."
