"May I do the honour of dancing with the fairest of them all?" Connor's deep voice came, low and sultry.
I smiled. Not holding back the blush from colouring my face.
"Yes, you shall, fair sire."
He lent a hand I took it gently, standing up from my seat. He led me carefully to the centre of the dance space where we danced under the subtle lights and spun me around till I faced him again to be greeted by his dimpled smile, exposing his perfect porcelain white dentations. He held me steady by the waist and I placed my hands delicately on his broad shoulders, letting him press my body against him. I could feel his heartbeat against my chest, fast and steady. It beat the same rhythm as mine and for once, I wondered if he felt the same way I felt about him.
What if he liked me too? Or loved me?
I snapped the thought out of my head.
No, Kenzie. This was just an act to him. He only loved Tory. Only Tory and no one else. I was just temporary.
"Is everything okay? You seem distracted." He whispered into my ear and my whole body shivered slightly at the tension he unconsciously brewed inside of me.
"I'm fine. I would like to use the restroom for a minute." I replied.
"Oh." He released me from his body a little and peered down at my face, his eyes soft and caring. "Do you want me to walk you there?"
"You don't have to. I'll find my way around." I faked a smile and let go of him completely. I turned my back to him and began to walk away before he insisted further.
I exhaled deeply and tried to pull myself together as I found my way through the small crowd of dancing bodies. Once I was past the gathering, I took the flight of stairs, almost brushing my body with a waiter and muttering an apology before continuing my way up the stairs. I walked down the hallway on the upper floor, drifting further away from the noise and music of the party, my eyes searching the doors of the rooms for the female restroom. I finally landed my eyes on a staff restroom and sighed in relief.
I could do with that.
I pushed the door open and headed straight for the mirror first. Supporting my hands on the surface of the sink, I stared at my reflection in the mirror. My dress still looked perfect on me and my hair and makeup were still intact.
Ari.
My eyes admired the camouflage that distincted me from a typical everyday girl to the daughter of a business tycoon. In every game I played, dressing up was the key to achieving the ultimate result.
The door of the restroom creaked open and I immediately turned on the water, pretending I was washing my hands. It surprised me when the person did not move further and only remained by the door side.
Cautiously, I raised my head and stared at the mirror to inspect whoever was behind me and there and then, the image that reflected in the mirror caused my head to spin and my blood ran cold in my body.
"You look stunning in that dress." Ryan's calmly measured tone came, eyes fixed to me like a hawk, never leaving me for a second.
I felt my tongue hang in my mouth and I could not bring myself to say a word.
Why was he here and how did he find me?
"You know...every other person kept talking about Connor's new gorgeous girlfriend. They think you are the most beautiful woman at the party tonight. But you know what I'm curious about?" His lips lifted in a smile. "Is how Connor was quick to dump his long-time sweetheart for a girl he had only met a few weeks ago at the hotel."
My heart beat stopped automatically this time as he mentioned the hotel.
He knew. He fucking knew.
Slowly, I turned to face him, discreetly stretching my hands behind me to reach for anything I could find for self-defence. My panic shot to the rooftop when I felt nothing but air.
"What do you want?" I asked, feeling my shaky legs weaken.
"You." He answered without a flinch.
"Why me?" I tried to act clueless but my shaky voice and sweaty body were a dead giveaway.
He laughed now and began to walk towards me in slow steady steps.
"You know..., you have quite the nerves. Faking identity and working for my wife. Hiding a camera in my suit. Working for hire for my sister's boyfriend."
"Connor is not Jessie's boyfriend," I replied, knowing fully well that I should keep my mouth shut by now if I wanted to walk out of here alive.
"Oh. Is that it?" He was face to face with me now, his cold emotionless eyes locked to my gaze. I gulped nervously, feeling sweat tinkle down my forehead.
"But are you? How does a hired girlfriend ever become a real girlfriend?"
I held my tongue in check now, fully aware that one tiny mistake might cause my head to be snapped off my neck. Not like I believed I was going to walk out of here alive but at least...
"I saw you talking to my wife earlier." He mentioned and I ransacked my head, trying to remember whom he was talking about.
"Blonde. Red evening dress. Simple and gentle and kind."
My heart trembled as I recalled the identity he was referring to. The young woman at the party. That was his wife? That was the woman who had hired me to investigate her husband? That was Kelly Washington?
"Did you tell her anything?"
I shook my head immediately.
"You know...I don't believe people would handle delicate stuff and not have a backup plan."
I shivered visibly as he leaned closer more, our faces almost touching.
"Where is the tape?"
I turned my face away from him and struggled to find my breath.
Was this where my sins will catch up with me?
"I don't have any tape with me."
He chuckled lightly. A weird funny chuckle that bore an evil aura.
"You know you do. You have that tape in your possession because you look too smart not to."
I hesitated to answer again and this time, he wasted no time in grabbing me by the neck, tightening his stronghold around the fragility of my throat. I reached for his hand and tried to pull his hold off but he did not budge one bit and I kept struggling between fighting for air and getting his hands off me.
"Where the fuck did you keep it?!" He pressed his hand around my throat tighter and harder, his nostrils flaring in rage.
I could not think properly or even say a word and the only thing I could think of was how to get his large hands off me and escape this room alive, which looking at the situation now, was against all odds.
Then without thinking, I lifted my knees with every last force that remained in me and made hard contact with his groins. Instantly, he let go of me and his knees kissed the floors, his hands holding to his groin as he groaned from the pain and cursed under his breath. I coughed violently as air rushed through my lungs again.
Without a waste of time, I ran out of the room and down the hallway, heading back to the party to find Connor and escape Ryan before he ever found me again.
