I let the cold evening air hit my face, enjoying the fresh feel on my body. I did not acknowledge any of the guests who were lurking outside like I was and they did not seem to care about me either. Picking my phone from my handbag, I sucked in a frustrated breath at the sight of the several missed calls from Jojo.
Fifty fucking missed calls.
I could clearly remember telling her earlier this morning that I had somewhere important to be before she got home and that I would be back a little later than I usually would, so she needn't worry about me. Now, I wondered which part of the heads-up she did not understand or if she was just missing me too much to handle the distance. I slid the phone back into my bag and just as I raised my gaze again, my eyes caught the sight of a young couple walking in the direction of the parking lot, the man's suit draped around the woman's shoulders to shield her from the cold. My heart caught a breath at the sight and an invincible needle pierced it deep.
Connor and Tory.
They were laughing as they walked in my direction, obviously not noticing me yet. Tory's flowery flared short gown and white heels were the simplest and yet most lovely piece I had seen this evening. Her neat short hair gave her that simple modest look and I felt myself envying her charms. Whilst Jessica was hot and gorgeous, Tory's looks were simply...beautiful and innocent.
Connor's eyes finally met mine and I immediately fixed a small smile on my face.
I should be happy with them. Not jealous. I meant nothing to Conor. No matter how much affection I felt for him. Tory was his. And Connor was hers. They were perfectly meant for each other.
Connor led Tory to me and she extended a hand to me as soon as they came close, a bright cheerful smile exposing her white perfectly arranged dentations. She had a round face that contrasted with Connor's perfectly angled ones.
"Hi. I'm Tory."
"I'm Ariana." I introduced. "Ari for short."
It surprised me how quick and easy it was for me to fit into my new role and become this new person without the slightest crack to arouse uncertainty or suspicions. Well...this had been my game for years. I was used to this kind of life. Becoming who someone else to get what you want. Or rather, what your clients want.
"It's so nice to finally meet you. Almost everyone at the party was talking about you. Connor's new girl. You look stunning."
I could not bring myself to a proper reaction to her compliments and I pondered whether I would place her compliment under sarcasm, genuinely or hate. Instead, I maintained my smile and gave a small nod in gratitude.
"Thank you. You are beautiful as well."
"Why are you outside? It's cold out here." Connor had a look of concern on his face.
Oh, well...let's see. Because you left your supposedly new girlfriend all alone by herself in a room full of toxic and competitive elite strangers. How was that for a good reason?
"Just wanted a breath of fresh air," I replied instead and Tory reached to touch my arm. I looked down at her hand on my arm, smoothening the sleeve of my dress, her smile now one of apologetic and emphatic.
"Forgive us for putting you through all these. We appreciate everything you are doing to help us."
Unlike Jessica who was predictable, Tory's words and actions came unanticipated. If she was a villain, she would be deadlier than Jessica. But then again, she obviously could never be one. She was Connor's perfect girlfriend. The victim in this entire family drama. The simple everyday girl who was neither rich nor pretending to be one. Unlike me. She was the one with the charming smile and loving personality. Jessica and I were the ones who were fit to be villains in every story.
"Thank you. I'm only doing my job." Clearing my throat, I faced Connor again, my feet itching to leave their presence already. "If you do not mind, I would like to leave already. The party is almost ended anyway."
"Oh." He said, craning his neck and looking in the direction of the party as if to confirm if I was telling the truth or not. "Alright."
Tory peeled the suit from her shoulders and handed it to him, her good-natured smile never slipping away for a second.
I wish I was her.
"Time to drive her home, Connor."
She rubbed my arm affectionately again as she turned her attention to me. "Make sure she gets home safe."
"Okay," Connor said, unmoving from his position, his eyes fixated on her as if it was going to be the last time they were going to see. As if he didn't want them to part just yet or that she was the one he was supposed to be driving home.
After what seemed like an awkward minute of silence between the three of us, with my toes still itching and wishing I could fly away and escape the pain their affection was inflicting on me, Connor finally sighed and extended his hand for me to take.
"Let me take you home, then."
I looked at Tory, seeking a kind of approval to be alone with her man.
What was I doing? This could not be me getting emotive over two struggling lovers fighting for a place in the world to love.
Tory nodded, her smile a little weakened now and my heart gave a pang of guilt, sorry that I was part of those who caused her bright smile to flicker.
I took Connor's hand and he gave her one last long look before walking away with me to the parking lot. And I knew he had left his heart right where Tory was.
It could never be mine or Jessica's.
Or so, I thought.
