When I got home, the entire room was smelling of butter and freshly baked stuff. Jojo sighted me from the kitchen and threw me a welcome smile and a broader one when her eyes met my handful of shopping bags. She abandoned her cooking and raced to me, grabbing the bags from my hands while I peeled the high heels off my legs that were getting sore from wearing them for long hours.
I collapsed tiredly on the couch and watched her take out the contents of the bags, her eyes widened in awe.
"Fucking hell, Kenz. How did you get these?"
I rolled my eyes at her sarcastically. "I stole them."
She giggled and pushed me roughly aside, taking a space beside me on the couch. She brought out a pair of white Nike sneakers from its shoe box and wowed at the sight. I smiled a small smile as she did so.
"This is beautiful!" She looked up from the sneakers to me. "Please tell me they are mine."
I stood up from the seat as my stomach grumbled in hunger and I began to walk in the direction of the kitchen. "Your lame wardrobe irritates me so much that I decided to help you level up a little."
She squealed in excitement. "Tell me you're not kidding, Kenz. Are these all for me?"
I nodded wearily as I peeped into the oven to see the baked pie she was making. "Yes, lame girl."
My sister ran to me and grabbed me in a hug. I laughed and tried to push her off me but she held on even tighter.
"I love you, Kenzie. So much."
I succeeded in disentangling her off me and I gave her a quick kiss on the forehead.
"Love you too, lame girl."
A frown crossed her face and the question I had dreaded since the moment I walked into that store to purchase the clothes came.
"But I wonder though, how did you manage to afford all these?"
"Through my part payment as a baby mama for some rich CEO," I replied and her eyes instantly widened this time in shock and her smile slipped from her face.
"What the fuck?"
I broke my serious countenance and smiled a fake smile to lighten the mood in the room again. Pinching her cheeks, I turned my back to her again, gingerly waiting for the pie to bake.
"Just kidding," I added. "I got a good-paying job."
"How were you able to get these then? These are worth thousands of dollars and would take you more than a month to make this kind of money." She did not sound convinced by my story.
"As I said, Jojo... I got a good-paying job. It's not your average paying job."
"Oh." I imagined her shrugging behind me in surrender. "Okay."
I felt a pang of guilt and foreboding fear in my heart. This was going to be the way she would react when my supposedly baby bump becomes obvious one day.
Not like I was planning to keep an end to my part of the deal in having a baby though.
There would be no baby.
....................
I spent the rest of the week watching Youtube videos on networking parties and what happened at the events. When I felt I had learned enough, I diverted to watching other catwalking tutorials that even though I already knew how to, I aimed to master. I moved on next to watch sarcasm videos and practised my pitch and tone.
"Hello, Jessica. I've heard so much about you." I lifted the corner of my lip in a smirk and allowed my eyes to stare without a break at the tall gorgeous model before me.
"Well, I didn't. How insignificant." Jessie eyed me and mirrored my smile, hers deadlier.
"Who? You mean yourself?"
The vibrating shrill of my phone ringing cut my practised speech and I groaned and gave one last look to the television in front of me that I envisioned as Jessie.
You wait, here. We are not done.
I stared at the caller ID to see an unsaved number. The urge to not pick an alien number ever since my escape from Ryan crossed my mind as a reminder but my subconscious self ignored the warning and I slid my finger across the receiver.
"Kenzie?"
My heart gave a wild flutter at the sound of his voice and I bit my lip and adjusted myself on the cushion to compose myself properly.
"Uhm...hi Connor?" I wondered how he managed to get my number. My inner self told me not to feel special. He probably got the number from Zed.
"Yes, it's me."
"Oh." I felt awkwardly mute and devoid of anything reasonable to say.
"Are you free today?"
My heart did a skip again. "Yes. Why?"
"Remember our appointment scheduled for today? I have to take you shopping for tomorrow's event."
I ran my fingers into my hair in a sudden reminder. I had been so caught up with preparing for the networking event that I forgot about my meeting with him today.
"Yes. I remember." I lied to cover up for my forgetfulness.
"So, are you free?"
"Yea. Sure."
"Great. I'll come to pick you up by 2 pm. Text me your address after the call ends."
This time, my heart stopped beating for a second.
Wait. Was he planning to come to pick me up at my place?
"You are coming to pick me up at my place?" I voiced out the exact words in my head.
"Yea. But if you don't want that, we could probably just..."
"No." I cut in hurriedly and immediately regretted how desperate I probably sounded. "I mean..., I don't have any problem with that."
"Cool. See you by 2 pm then."
"Yea. See you."
He finally ended the call and I let the phone linger to my ear as I stared into blank space dreamily. I felt my cheeks warm up and a huge smile stretched across the sides of my face.
I was about to go shopping with my crush!
My eyes instantly flicked wide open.
Did I just call someone my crush?
