CHAPTER 14

　　The second picture was another lady in strawberry blonde hairs, a one-sided dimple smile on her face as she stretched her hand towards the camera as the picture was taken. A feeling of familiarity hit me and I crinkled my eyes in concentration as I tried to remember where I might have met her before. Maybe I once saw her photo in the magazine like Connor's.
　　I glanced at Connor and the small gentle smile on his face was enough to tell me who she was.
　　'Tory. My girlfriend."
　　I nodded, feeling my heart falling out of place, landing gently gently down like the dried broken leaves in autumn. Broken.
　　Stop exaggerating, Kenzie.
　　'Oh." I replied.
　　'We have been together since our college days. My parents think she is not a good fit for me. That was when she came up with this idea."
　　I frowned and ransacked my brain as I tried to comprehend his word.
　　'She came up with the idea of a fake girlfriend?" I looked at him in complete dismay.
　　'Yes." He nodded, taking it too normal for my liking.
　　'Wouldn't she get jealous or insecure that another woman…"
　　'We already talked about it. Tory and I. Keep our emotions aside and make certain sacrifices to get what we want."
　　I got a chill of nostalgia as he spoke
　　Sacrifices. Wants. That was their motive too? How far can people go to get what they want?
　　'You'll get to meet her soon. She an amazing person." He said again with a smile and retrieved the picture from me. He handed me the printed document that had ‘contract' written on it and I open the document and glanced through the pages.
　　'First of all, I want to make sure you know what you are doing and truly want to do this, Kenzie."
　　I stopped at a section of the contract that talked about the pregnancy and felt my stomach churn in discomfort. I faced him again.
　　'Did your girlfriend also come up with the idea of a pregnancy too?"
　　His eyes fell from me and he looked at the contract on the table for a few seconds.
　　'Yes."
　　'How can she be comfortable with another woman having your child?" I should probably keep my mouth shut right now but I don't. 'Is there something else I should know that you are not telling me?"
　　He sighed. 'Jessie is not an easy person. I'm sure Zed must have told you about that. She is never going to leave until she succeeds in coming between me and Tory. That is the part where you come in."
　　Connor raised his gaze to meet mine again.
　　'In our fake love story, I have broken up with Tory because I just realized she isn't good enough for me. Then enter you, the perfect, badass new girlfriend who just relocated from Canada after finishing her masters. Jessie is going to be so pissed but that isn't going to be enough to make her leave. She would want to stay and piss off the new girl just like she did with Tory. Jessie would not be a match for you because you will be bold and gorgeous and eloquent. And worse…, you live with me in my apartment."
　　He paused and scanned my face for any reaction and I fought to maintain my calm demeanor.
　　He's kidding, right?
　　'Jessie would come to realize you are not as vulnerable as Tory and she is going to be afraid of you. But again, that still wouldn't be enough to scare her away. Now enters the pregnancy." He cleared his throat and shifted a little in his seat, obviously a little uncomfortable with the topic too.
　　'Everyone is going to doubt the pregnancy but we are going to prove it to them through a real test. They are still going to be unconvinced and believe it was forged. Over the next months, they will see the true result of the pregnancy and Jessie…is going to get pissed and leave."
　　Because she cannot stand her man having a child with another woman. His real woman should feel this way too.
　　I rummaged my head trying to understand Connor's relationship with his girlfriend. Why was I having a weird feeling about them. Or rather, her.
　　'So…, there is going to be a real baby then?"
　　He nodded and avoided my eyes again. 'After Jessie leaves, you are going to leave as well. I'll find you a nice place somewhere very far away where no one would recognize you. I'll pay you another funding for the baby and make sure you both never lack. Then, I'll tell my parents you left all of a sudden. I'll make them see Tory is the right woman for me. And with all that has happened, they would not have a problem believing the story."
　　I really shouldn't be feeling bad right now but I wasn't going to deny that I am. I mean, who wouldn't? Seeing you means nothing in other people's life except an object meant to be used. And forgotten.
　　I cleared my throat, stopping my emotions from overriding my thought.
　　'How much are you giving for the baby's welfare?"
　　'Five hundred thousand dollars." He said without a single flinch and I swear I almost choked on my breathe. 'Plus, the payment for your job. That's a total of seven hundred thousand dollars."
　　I couldn't keep my eyes from widening in shock at the amount thrown to my face. I was sure that in my entire life, I would never see that kind of amount. Never ever.
　　'There is going to be a networking party this weekend. All the top business moguls are going to be there. Tory and Jessie too. I will present you as my new girlfriend to everyone."
　　'Will I be there too?" I felt a little startled by the unexpected plans already.
　　'Yes." He answered. 'It's on a Saturday night. I will pick you up for shopping on Friday."
　　'And about the payment?"
　　'Yes, it is stated right there in the contract that I would pay you in four quarters. One hundred thousand dollars for a part payment, and two hundred thousand dollars when you get pregnant, two hundred thousand dollars when the baby bump gets obvious and the final two hundred thousand dollars when you leave."
　　I stared unblinkingly at him even though my insides were throwing a ball party.
　　Zed was right. This deal is enough to change my life forever.
