When I walked into the entrance door of the café, my eyes caught the slender athletic frame of Zed sitting at the table pushed to the last edge of the walls. His eyes were glued to his phone and his American tux gave him the insignia of a young wealthy business person. I took in a long deep confident breath and walked to his direction. He only raised his gaze to meet me when I was a few feet away and immediately rose to pull out a seat for me.
I smiled at his gesture and let myself settle on the chair and he returned back to his own seat.
'Hope you had a good night's sleep, Kenz."
I nodded and settled my handbag on my laps.
'Yes, I did."
'Great." He smiled back and his eyes fumbled around the cafeteria and I figured he was either too nervous or ashamed to face me or if there was something else.
'Uhm…, what would you like to have?"
'Coffee would do. Iced latte."
He nodded and beckoned to the waitress and in a few minutes, our orders of iced brown latte were lying in front of us. He took a large sip of his drink and I imitated his motion.
'Kenz…"
'First of all,"
We paused as our worlds collide simultaneously. Zed smiled a small polite smile and gave me a small go-ahead nod.
'Go on."
I shook my head.
'No, you first."
'Ladies first."
'I insist."
He sighed deeply and leaned his weight closer to the table, his eyes lowered.
'I don't want you to think I am risking you in another problem. I only want the best for you. But if you don't think you can pull this off, it's okay to turn it down…"
'I am not turning this down."
He lifted his gaze, a surprised look on his face.
I sighed and bit my lip.
'If there is one thing I have learned since the first day we left the orphanage, it is that without sacrifice, one cannot gain anythinh. In order to gain something, one has to sacrifice something of equivalent value." I paused and held his gaze steady. 'I don't know what kind of sacrifices you may have made to get to the position you are today but I am sure it is not an easy one. Nothing comes easy for people like us, Zed."
He lowered his gaze again, his shoulders slouched and vulnerable.
'These past weeks have turned my life in an unexpected angle. This is my chance to make another sacrifice that would change my life for good. And I will play the game right, whether through foul or fair."
He looked at me again and reached for my hands. Fixing his gaze to my fingers he squeezed my hands in assurance.
'I really wish you never had to go through this, Kenz. You are smart and strong and pretty. You deserve better."
'We." I corrected him, squeezing his hand too. 'We deserve better, Zed."
We smiled at each other for the entire moment, a smile that hid our pains and worst memories. And secrets we were not ready to share with each other. Yet.
'What did I miss?" Connor's deep voice comes from behind, breaking the moment. I turned to the direction of his voice and he smiled at me before drawing a seat in between Zed and I.
'A lot." Zed immediately switched to his jovial self and he shares a rough handshake with Connor.
'Hey, Ms. Seattle."
'Hello, Mr. Meyers." I smiled and looked at him properly for the first time since he joined us. I tried to catch myself from admiring his fine features. How can someone be this lithe and handsome?
Zed's chair screeched as he got up and shot a quick glance at his watch.
'Alright now, you two. I have to get going. Duty calls."
I panicked and shot him a death stare but he only gave an apologetic smile.
What the heck am I supposed to do without him? I can barely stare properly at Connor without feeling the awkward feel I get, and now he's leaving me all alone with the insanely good-looking dude that looked like someone who just stepped out of sin city, begging for a spot in my bed, all naked and juicy.
'I'll give you a call, Kenz." He said and ran off without sparing me a second glance.
I swear to God, I am going to be the end of him.
I tried to control my breath and I distracted myself by consuming the coffee in front of me. Connor remained silent too until what looked like a whole minute of awkward silence passed.
'How have you been, Kenzie?"
My stomach did a 360-degree flip at the way he had called my name with cautiousness and calm and I figured my name had never sounded sweeter coming from someone else's mouth. And with the way he looked at me with that look of concern in his eyes, one thing was obvious.
He definitely remembered me.
'Fine." I am glad I did not sound as shaky and scared like I did on our first meeting.
He nodded his head at my words and we remained in another round of silence for a few more seconds.
'You never reached out to me after that day." He scanned my face as he spoke and I admired his hazel grey eyes again. 'I got worried."
My insides warmed up again at his last words.
I got worried.
The thought of Connor getting worried over me and checking his phone every passing minute in anticipation for my call caused my heart to flutter like a high school girl. I stopped myself from reaching out to feel the warm blush that was beginning to creep up my face.
I cleared my throat to bring myself back to the present.
'I am sorry about that. But as you can see, I am doing absolutely well and there is no need for worry." I gave a wide closed mouth smile and even though his composure didn't seem like he believed any of the things I said, he nodded and balanced himself properly on his seat.
'That's a good thing."
We remained in a third round of silence again and my insides felt jittery. I played with the chain handles of my handbag and cursed Zed inwardly.
That jerk. If only he was here, he would have known how to handle the situation perfectly.
I make a mental note to break his thumb the next time I see him.
'Do you think you can do it?"
I looked at him and his gaze remained steady on me. What is it with him and his intimidating stares?
'If you don't feel comfortable with any of this, it's okay to walk away and…"
'Are you underestimating me, Mr. Meyers?" I squared my shoulders and switched to my professional tone and he raised a brow at my sudden spokenness.
'Uh…not really. Just that…"
'You should learn to trust me if you want to work with me. I have handled similar situations in the past. This is not my first or second or third time."
But you never had a child for any of them, did you?
He sighed and nodded; his composure now relaxed.
I am sure I have succeeded in convincing him I am capable enough.
'Zed told you the full story, yeah?"
I nodded.
'Come over to my place this evening. I'll call you by six."
'Why? Do we start today?"
'No. Not yet. We start next week. But we have to meet somewhere more private to talk about the whole deal and go into every small details you would need to know and be prepared for. Is that okay with you?"
I nodded and gulped, feeling quite on edge with the idea of being with him alone in his place.
'Yes."
'First, we start off with ditching the formality and calling each other by our first names. Are you okay with that?"
I pressed a smile on my lips.
'Yes, Connor."
This is really happening.
