Zed drove me home an hour later and when I insisted, he came in, he turned me down and maintained he had a few unfinished businesses at the company. I pouted subconsciously in disappointment and he promised to make it up to me. When I was about to alight from the car, he held me back by the arms.
'We still have something to talk about."
'What is it?"
He adjusted himself as he sat. 'Remember the other time I called last week and told you there was a job for you?"
I nodded. 'Yea."
'It's still available." He peered more intently into my eyes. 'And I want you to go for it."
'The ICT job at the company? Of course, I'm fucking going for it…"
'No, Kenzie." He shook his head. 'Not the one in the company."
My eyes crinkled and I looked on in pure oblivion.
'What other job?"
'First of all, you have to promise to listen to me till the end and not jump into conclusions until I finish."
I nodded my head slowly. This was getting creepy.
He gave a small smile of gratitude before proceeding.
'You met Connor Meyers back at the company, yeah?"
I nodded, a sudden chill rushing through my veins again.
'There is news his parents are setting up an arranged marriage for him."
I mouthed an ‘oh' and he continued. I still wasn't seeing how any of this was my business.
'He is totally against his parents plans but old folks don't seem to give a damn. The girl he is being set up for marriage with is Jessica Brooks. Her parents are multi billion dollar business moguls."
'Okay…"
'He wants a girl who would pretend to be his girlfriend during Jessica's one year stay in the country. A girl who would push Jessie to the walls so hard until she would have no option but to call the whole thing off herself."
'So, technically, he wants a bad bitch."
He paused for a few seconds as if considering the word I had used. He finally shrugged. 'Something of that sort."
'And why are you telling me this?" I asked, even though I already knew the answer to my own question.
He wants to hire me for the job.
'He is willing to pay two hundred thousand dollars for a fake girlfriend."
My eyes protruded and my breath stopped for a moment.
Two hundred fucking what?
'Shut up!" I exclaimed and he nodded his head at me.
'Hold up, a sec." A new suspicion grew in me. 'Why is he willing to spend all that money on a fake girlfriend when he can get a real one?"
'He has a girlfriend. Tory. She is not from a wealthy home. His parents would never accept her and he doesn't want to risk losing his place in the family too. A fake girlfriend would clear the way for his real woman."
'What if this Jessica girl refuses to leave him alone no matter how hard they push her?"
'She won't."
I scoffed at his overconfidence.
'Why?"
'Because the fake girlfriend would have a child for him. Jessica can never stand that blow."
•••
At night, while Jojo slept, I was sleep deprived and my mind drifted to Zed's ridiculous offer.
Why in the world would I get pregnant for another woman's boyfriend? Which silly woman allows that? Not like I could ever truly comprehend the mystery of love because I have never fallen in love and have remained single my entire life. But, what in the hell was that all about?
There are many reasons to reject the obnoxious deal. First, I was done playing dress up and willing to start a new life again. Second, I want nothing better than keeping a low profile and making sure Ryan never finds me. Third, I was fucking too young to have a child?
Why should I be someone's baby mama at twenty-two?
I should have smacked Zed right across the face for even making an attempt to present the offer to me? What did he take me for? A broke ass dropout?
Apparently, there is no denying I am just that.
But then again, there was a second thought keeping me up at this odd hour of the night.
The money. Two hundred fucking thousand dollars.
That would be enough to get me a house, preferably a condo. I could get another car and let JoJo take the old one. I could go back to college and earn that degree without ever having to worry about me and JoJo's tuition fees.
My toes wriggled with excitement at the thought. Life would be…perfect.
…with a baby too.
My excitement dropped at the reminder. Why was the last option necessary? Wasn't there a way we could push Connor's betrothed away without causing a lifelong repercussion?
My eyes snapped open at the thought. There can be a way to send the bitch parking without the last option.
I smile a weird toothy smile. There is going to be a way. With me Involved, there is always a way.
There will be no baby.
