'Yo! Sis." Zed teeth gleamed behind the wheels of the car and he stepped out of the car and came up to me just immediately.
'Zed?" Of course, I couldn't believe my eyes. I mean, it was obviously the Zed that I know, my childhood pick-pocket and crime partner, riding an expensive car and dressed in a…tuxedo? Was he playing dress up or what?
'Yes, baby. It is I." He gives me a quick hug and I push him away immediately.
And is this Zed smelling of men aftershave and cologne? Where did his awful body odor go?
'Why are you here?" I continued to look wide eyed at him, his clothes, his expensive Italian leather shoes and his car.
'What do you mean why am I here?" He said with his signature boyish deep laugh. 'I work here."
I blinked at him on repeat and let my mouth gape. No fucking way.
Figuring I wasn't going to believe him that easy, he pulls out his wallet.
Is that a fucking Rolex wristwatch on his wrist?
He shoves a business card into my hands.
'You are looking at the general manager of Star World Entertainment." He gestures to the building as I take in the details of the business card. His business cards.
Zed Hadid.
General manager.
STAR WORLD ENTERTAINMENT.
'Fuck me!" I curse, looking back at the third culprit of an orphanage escape. I squealed and flung myself around him in a tight rough embrace, jumping ecstatically.
He laughed and let me display my excitement for an entire minute until I was ready to detangle myself from him.
'How could you not tell me?" I slapped his arm and he yelped in a pain I know was false.
'I tried to. You never pick my calls even if I were to bug your phone a thousand times. Last week, you practically hung up on me before I even had the chance to talk."
For the first time, I felt sorry for treating him like I do. But I camouflaged my emotions and continued to pick on him.
'And JoJo?"
He laughed a laugh that I have missed. 'Apparently, she thinks I am a bad influence. We both know better."
I did not say anything else and just stared at those mischievous tree bark eyes I had grown to know.
'I've missed you, Zed."
'Look at that. The ice queen finally admits."
I nudged him playfully in the arm and he laughed again.
'I miss you too, Kenzie." A curious look crossed his face. 'What are you doing here, anyway?"
I sighed and hugged my frame with thin arms. 'Job hunting. Got rejected."
He frowned. 'Why?"
'There is no vacancy…"
He pulled me by the arm and led me as he walked into the building. 'Of course, there is a vacancy."
As we re-entered the entrance hall, I smirked inwardly at the looks on the faces of the guards and ‘miss arrogant', their eyes never breaking off Zed's arms entangled around mine.
Did I hear you say I missed my way again?
'Good day, sir." The blonde arrogant lady was immediately transitioned to a lovely all smiley princess in a splint of a second.
'Hello, Miss Rice." Zed's voice was suddenly different from the one I had always known as he slips on his professional aura.
Was this really Zed or a doppelganger pretending to be him?
'Is the job position in the ICT unit still available?" He added.
A small frown creased over the blonde's forehead. 'Yes…sir."
'Good." He smoothened his tie. 'Hire her for the position."
The blonde mirrored my shocked expression and gawked at Zed, trying to comprehend what he had just said.
ICT? The hell? I barely went halfway through college or even have a degree to earn the job.
Was he trying to mock me?
'Excuse me, sir?"
He raised a brow questioningly at her and she immediately composed herself again before speaking.
'We…we haven't done an interview…"
'Then schedule one." He cuts in. 'But make sure she gets the job."
She swallowed hard and gives a weak defeated smile.
'A new one, huh?" A deep husky voice from behind us gave me a sense of nostalgia and my body felt a kind of eerie chill. My mind replays the voice in my head over and over again and when the owner of the voice stands just beside us, patting Zed on the back in greeting, I raise my eyes and the weird sensation in my stomach from last week returns again.
