'I'm sorry. The position has already been taken." The woman behind the coffee counter said, a sincere apologetic smile plastered on her face.
Well, if you've already gotten someone for the job, then fucking get rid of the vacancy notice outside your shop and stop teasing the hopes of the unemployed!
I smiled back even though my insides were burning with disappointment and rage.
'Alright, I understand. Thank you for your time."
The woman nodded; her eyes genuinely sorry.
Well, at least she treated me better than the other lady at the departmental store who I was sure wasn't even up to the position of the manager.
'I wish you the best of luck."
'Thank you." I replied and leave through the door I had walked in with. I let out a heavy sigh I didn't know I was holding in. This was the fifth place I had gone to seek for a job, every single one of them turning me down. My feet were beginning to ache from walking and my stomach growled hungrily. Just one more stop, one last stop and I am done for the day. Tomorrow will be a better day with better chances and opportunities.
I passed by a tall high office building and stopped again to inspect the premises.
STAR WORLD ENTERTAINMENT
I savored the name in my lips. It sounded familiar and I tried to remember where I had come across the name before. With the tiny windows like squaric doll houses, there would probably be up to a hundred people working in here. The thought of walking in and hoping for a spot to work crossed my head but I shook my head at the ridiculous idea.
This was a god-damned office building for Christ-sake. These people would be accepting graduates and professionals. Not someone like me - A college dropout.
I began to walk a few steps but stopped again.
You only get what you have the courage to ask for.
I shut my eyes for a brief second as the quote played in my head. Where did I even hear those words from?
But it didn't matter right now. All that mattered what this moment. This is a new life and I am going to take what I wanted, whether I deserved it or not. I took a deep breath and find my scrunchie from my bag. I wrap it around my hair, hanging my hair in a high ponytail. Setting a straight face, I exhaled deeply and strode towards the building. As I walked closer to the security guards, I nod at them and give them a smile, hoping to get on their good side and be spared of any further questions.
'How may we help you, miss?" The larger security man said, his bald head gleaming under the overhead lights of the building.
Shit.
I maintained my bright smile, expertly managing my composure.
'Good morning."
But the man remained unsmiling and only snorted at my greeting.
'I would like to apply for a slot in this company." I added
The man looked at me from the tip of my head to the soles of my feet and shook his head.
'We don't do free community service around here."
I stopped myself from gaping and I felt I didn't hear him right. Did he just underestimate me based on my appearance?
It was my turn to glance at my dressing now and I still didn't see anything wrong with my baggy sweatpants and dark casual tees…
'Mr. Rico. Is there a problem?" A tall gorgeous blonde in a neatly tailored suit and wide legged pants walked towards us, her dark shiny heels resounding as she advanced towards our direction. Again, I cast my dressing a look one last time and looked back at her outfit again.
Now, I see where the problem was and I don't blame the security guard for his heartless assumption.
'Nothing serious ma'am. Just a girl who's lost…"
'I want a job." I cut in, taking my chance before it slipped away. The lady who seemed to be my age rose a brow, obviously quite taken aback by my audacity. Just like the security men, she eyes my full frame and the corner of her lips quirks up in an unfriendly smile.
'Are you sure you are in the right place?"
'Yes." I said, filtering her harsh words away.
She continued to eye me and then crossed a hand over her small bosom, her lips pursed in sheer arrogance.
'We have enough cleaners and helps around. I don't think we are in need of your service now or anytime soon."
I bit my lips and glanced around the large interiors of the room. The receptionists at their tables were busy with their work and paid little attention to us.
This was it. No one is going to save me. I just ended up getting thrown out without a blink of an eye. Just like I had thought I would.
'Okay. Thank you." I gave a small nod and the security guard opened the exit door for me which I walked out from. With my head lowered to the ground in disappointment, I sigh and drag my feet away. Of course, I knew getting a slot to work here was totally unrealistic and too good to be true but my egoistic pride had prompted me to wish for stars when I knew girls like me can never even have castles.
A loud horn from a car that drove into the building caused my heart to almost leap out of my heart and I jumped on reflex. The car stopped right in front of me and the driver window pulled down. And just when I was beginning to think some guy or lady was going to curse at me for trying to cause an accident, my eyes opened wide in shock.
It was him.
